
Saudi Arabia participates in the 2026 Sports Diplomacy Summit in Washington

In a move reflecting the growing importance of sports as a tool for soft power and international engagement, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the United States actively participated in the “Sports Diplomacy Summit 2026” held in Washington, D.C. This participation comes within the framework of intensive international dialogues related to preparations for hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The summit brought together leading government officials, diplomats, and sports and business leaders from around the world to discuss the role of sports in strengthening international cooperation.
The Kingdom was represented at this important event by the Head of the Public Diplomacy and Media Affairs Department at the Embassy, Hessa Al-Yahya, who joined rich dialogue sessions that addressed how to use sports to support economic growth, strengthen ties between peoples, and build a shared cultural understanding that transcends political boundaries.
Sports as a bridge for communication within Vision 2030
In the Kingdom, sports are no longer merely a recreational activity, but have become a cornerstone of the comprehensive national transformation strategy within the framework of Vision 2030. Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in the sports sector to diversify its economy, improve the quality of life for its citizens and residents, and enhance its global standing. During its participation, the embassy highlighted the Kingdom's significant efforts in this field, including hosting and organizing numerous major international sporting events and championships, such as Formula 1 races, world boxing championships, and international golf tournaments, in addition to attracting top international football stars to the Saudi Professional League.

Participation in the Sports Diplomacy Summit of particular importance, as it serves as a platform for exchanging expertise and building international partnerships. The embassy emphasized that sport is an effective universal language for fostering understanding between different societies, highlighting the pivotal role of the United States, Canada, and Mexico in co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup in promoting this concept. The Kingdom views this event as an opportunity to deepen cooperation and knowledge exchange, especially given its preparations to host the 2034 World Cup, which will place it at the heart of the global sporting landscape for the next decade.
The summit witnessed a remarkable attendance of representatives from US and international government agencies, sports organizations, and community institutions, where participants discussed the contributions of sports to public diplomacy, economic development, and activating the role of youth in societies, reflecting the international consensus on the positive power of sports in achieving progress and peace.
