The Foreign Minister discusses the latest developments in the Middle East with the Chinese envoy

His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, received today at the Ministry's headquarters in Riyadh, the Special Envoy of the Chinese Government to the Middle East, Zhai Jun. These talks come at a crucial time, as the region witnesses intensive diplomatic activity aimed at containing escalating tensions and enhancing prospects for peace and stability.

During the meeting, the strong bilateral relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the People's Republic of China were reviewed, in addition to discussing the latest regional and international developments. Both sides focused particularly on the security and political repercussions of the ongoing events in the Middle East, and the international efforts underway to de-escalate tensions and support political solutions that guarantee international peace and security.

Strategic context and important timing

The visit of the Chinese envoy is of particular importance given Beijing's growing role in international politics, especially in the Middle East. These consultations are a continuation of the ongoing coordination between Riyadh and Beijing, particularly in light of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries and their shared vision of prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts. This meeting is part of a series of diplomatic initiatives led by the Kingdom to unify international positions on just Arab causes.

China's role in regional stability

Geopolitically, China has recently emerged as a key player in regional affairs, particularly after its successful mediation in the historic agreement to restore diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran in March 2023. The Foreign Minister's meeting with the Chinese envoy reflects the two sides' desire to capitalize on this diplomatic momentum to address other thorny issues, most notably the situation in the Palestinian territories, where China consistently calls for a ceasefire and the implementation of the two-state solution, which is entirely consistent with the firm Saudi position and the efforts exerted by the ministerial committee emanating from the Arab-Islamic Summit.

Strengthening international cooperation

These discussions highlight the depth of coordination between key international players and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a pillar of stability in the region. Through these meetings, both sides seek to develop common positions that support humanitarian efforts and prevent the conflict from escalating, which could negatively impact international shipping lanes and the global economy.

The meeting was attended by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs, Ambassador Dr. Saud Al-Sati, which reflects the high political importance of the issues discussed during the meeting.
