The Saudi Foreign Minister discusses Syria's security and economy with his Syrian counterpart

His Royal Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, received today, Monday, at the Ministry's headquarters in Riyadh, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Syrian Arab Republic, Asaad Al-Shaibani. This meeting comes within the framework of the ongoing diplomatic efforts led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to strengthen joint Arab action and coordinate positions on pressing regional issues.
Details of the Saudi-Syrian talks
During the meeting, bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries were reviewed, with both sides focusing on the latest developments in Syria. The discussions also covered extensively ways to support Syria's security and stability, as well as vital economic issues of concern to the Syrian people, aiming to contribute to achieving their aspirations for development and prosperity and overcoming the current challenges facing the region.
The context of the return of relations and the Arab role
This meeting is particularly significant as it comes as a continuation of the Arab rapprochement with Damascus, which culminated in the outcomes of the Arab Summit in Jeddah in 2023, where Syria regained its seat in the Arab League. Through these meetings, Saudi Arabia seeks to activate the leading Arab role in resolving the Syrian crisis, consistently emphasizing the need to preserve Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty, create suitable conditions for the return of refugees and internally displaced persons, and combat terrorism in all its forms.
Strategic and security importance
The discussion of security and economic issues comes at a sensitive time, as Syria faces significant economic challenges that require regional cooperation to alleviate the severity of the humanitarian crisis. Furthermore, security coordination between Riyadh and Damascus is a cornerstone for ensuring regional stability, particularly regarding border control and combating drug trafficking—issues of shared concern that directly impact Arab national security.
High-level diplomatic presence
The meeting was attended on the Saudi side by His Highness Prince Musab bin Mohammed Al-Farhan, Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs, and Ambassador Dr. Saud Al-Sati, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs, which reflects the great interest that the Kingdom attaches to developing relations with the Syrian side and following up on joint files with precision and interest.
