Saudi Foreign Minister discusses de-escalation with Iran and Afghanistan
In a diplomatic move reflecting the pivotal role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the region, His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, held separate telephone conversations with his counterparts in Afghanistan and Iran. These talks come at a critical juncture, as Riyadh seeks to bolster regional stability and intensify efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East.
Strategic talks with Tehran
During his call with the acting Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Bagheri Kani, bilateral relations between the two countries were reviewed, and regional and international developments of mutual interest were discussed. These talks are particularly significant as they come in the context of the rapprochement initiated between Riyadh and Tehran, mediated by China in March 2023, which ended a years-long diplomatic rift. This ongoing communication underscores the two countries' desire to build bridges of trust and address contentious issues through dialogue, which is essential for de-escalating tensions in regions such as Yemen, Syria, and Iraq, and for ensuring the security of vital waterways in the Arabian Gulf.
Engagement with Afghanistan to promote stability
In another call, Prince Faisal bin Farhan discussed with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi the latest developments in Afghanistan and key regional issues of common interest. These discussions reflect the Kingdom's commitment to supporting Afghanistan's security and stability, preventing it from becoming a haven for terrorist groups, and providing humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people. As a leading nation in the Islamic world, the Kingdom continues its efforts to urge the current government in Kabul to adopt inclusive policies that respect the rights of all segments of Afghan society and ensure the country's positive integration into its regional and international environment.
The importance of Saudi diplomatic moves
These contacts are part of a broader Saudi strategy aimed at resolving conflicts and promoting diplomatic solutions as a key tool for achieving regional security. The Kingdom recognizes that realizing the ambitious goals of Vision 2030 requires a stable and secure regional environment, free from conflicts and proxy wars. Through these efforts, Riyadh is reaffirming its role as an active force for stability, striving to protect its vital national interests while simultaneously contributing to building a more secure and prosperous future for the entire Middle East region.
