Transportation preparations for Hajj: 6 airports and trains to serve the pilgrims

Exceptional preparations for the Hajj season

His Excellency the Minister of Transport and Logistics of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Engineer Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, announced the completion of the integrated transportation system's readiness to receive pilgrims during this year's Hajj season. During a government press conference, Al-Jasser confirmed that all air, land, sea, and rail transport sectors are operating at full capacity, supported by a field workforce exceeding 46,000 personnel, with the aim of providing a safe and convenient transportation experience for pilgrims from the moment they arrive in the Kingdom until their safe departure.

Historical background and ongoing efforts

Managing crowds and transportation during the Hajj season is a formidable logistical challenge that the Kingdom has faced throughout history, as the Hajj is one of the world's largest annual human gatherings. Recognizing this immense responsibility, Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in developing advanced infrastructure to serve pilgrims, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes serving the guests of God. These efforts include expanding airports, establishing modern road networks, and launching mega-railway projects connecting the holy sites with major cities, all aimed at enhancing services and facilitating the performance of the rituals.

Details of the operational plan for the transport sectors

Air transport: The Kingdom's gateways to the world

In the air transport sector, six major airports were prepared to receive over 1.5 million pilgrims arriving from around the world. To accommodate this, more than 3 million seats were made available across 104 airlines connecting the Kingdom to over 300 international destinations. The Minister noted the expansion of the “Lock-Free Traveler” initiative to include all international pilgrims, allowing them to check their luggage directly into their accommodations, thus reducing congestion and streamlining arrival procedures. Plans were also in place to transport over 3.8 million bottles of Zamzam water by air.

Rail transport: Speed and efficiency at the heart of emotions

Rail transport plays a pivotal role in the Hajj plan, with the Haramain High-Speed Railway providing over two million seats across 5,300 trips, connecting Mecca and Medina at speeds exceeding 300 kilometers per hour, significantly reducing travel time. The Al-Mashaaer Al-Mugaddassah Metro operates seven days a week, serving pilgrims traveling between Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah, with 2,000 trips across nine stations and a massive capacity of up to 72,000 passengers per hour, making it a vital artery for managing the crowds.

Land transport: a network of roads and a huge fleet

On the ground, the Ministry implemented extensive maintenance plans covering more than 6,000 kilometers of roads leading to the holy sites. Among the most prominent innovative technologies used this year was the expansion of road cooling technology, which involves coating asphalt surfaces with special materials to reduce temperature and alleviate heat stress on pilgrims. This network is supported by a massive fleet of more than 33,000 buses and 5,000 taxis, with dedicated shuttle buses and direct transport between the holy sites and the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

Global importance and impact

The importance of these preparations extends beyond the local level to encompass the entire Muslim world. The Kingdom's success in managing this global event reinforces its position as custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and underscores its capability to organize and manage the largest religious gatherings. Furthermore, providing a safe and comfortable Hajj experience for millions of Muslims from diverse nationalities and cultures leaves a profoundly positive impact and reflects the Kingdom's civilized image on the international stage, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to serving Islam and Muslims.
