Hajj free of epidemics: Health Minister confirms readiness of 189 medical facilities
Saudi Health Minister Fahd bin Abdulrahman Al-Jalajel announced the success of the health plans for this year's Hajj season, confirming the stability of the overall health situation and its complete absence of any epidemic outbreaks or diseases that could threaten public health among the pilgrims. This announcement came during a government press conference, in which he highlighted the full readiness of the health system to serve the pilgrims, noting that these preparations are an extension of the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince to ensure the safety and security of the pilgrims and provide them with the highest levels of care.
Historical background of health crowd management in Hajj
Managing healthcare during the Hajj season presents a formidable logistical and health challenge, as Saudi Arabia welcomes millions of pilgrims from around the world to a limited geographical area within a short timeframe. Throughout history, large gatherings of people have provided fertile ground for the spread of diseases and epidemics. The Kingdom has accumulated extensive and profound experience in this field, particularly after its successful handling of previous global health challenges such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and, more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated strict and unprecedented health protocols. It is upon this accumulated experience that the Ministry of Health has developed its advanced preventive and treatment plans for this year, which are based on proactive epidemiological surveillance and rapid response to any health emergency.
An integrated medical care system for pilgrims
Minister Al-Jalajel revealed the establishment of a comprehensive and integrated medical network to serve pilgrims, comprising 189 healthcare facilities, including hospitals, primary care centers, and mobile clinics, strategically distributed throughout Mecca, Medina, and the holy sites to ensure easy access and rapid response. He explained that these facilities have a capacity exceeding 6,500 hospital beds, including more than 800 intensive care beds for critical cases, in addition to over 280 beds dedicated to the immediate treatment of heat exhaustion and sunstroke, reflecting preparedness to meet anticipated climatic challenges.
Human resources and modern technologies
Behind this massive system stands an army of over 40,000 medical, technical, administrative, and volunteer personnel, working around the clock to provide necessary care. This human effort is supported by a state-of-the-art ambulance fleet comprising more than 370 fully equipped ambulances and seven air ambulances to ensure the fastest possible transport of critical cases, in addition to the operation of 12 blood banks. The Minister also highlighted the pivotal role of technology in enhancing services through the operation of the "Seha" virtual hospital, which provides specialized remote medical consultations to field teams, contributing to faster and more accurate diagnosis and the provision of appropriate treatment.
The importance of adhering to regulations and its impact on public health
Minister Al-Jalajel emphasized the significant positive impact of the "No Hajj Without a Permit" campaign adopted by security authorities, explaining that medical planning and resource allocation are precisely based on the approved number of registered pilgrims. He stressed that the presence of unregistered pilgrims places undue pressure on medical facilities and may deprive compliant pilgrims of the prompt and comprehensive care they deserve. Furthermore, those in violation expose themselves to the risk of severe heat stress due to the lack of basic services such as equipped tents and designated shade structures to protect them from the scorching sun, thus increasing their likelihood of serious health risks.
International impact of a safe and healthy Hajj season
The Kingdom’s success in ensuring a pandemic-free Hajj season extends beyond its local impact, representing an international public health triumph. The safe return of millions of pilgrims to their home countries prevents the cross-border transmission of any infections, a direct Saudi contribution to global health stability. This success also reinforces the Kingdom’s position as a leader in crowd management and a trusted center for the Muslim world, sending a reassuring message to millions of Muslims worldwide that their spiritual journey is conducted with the highest standards of safety and healthcare.
