The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Jordan discuss developments in Gaza and the region
Amid the escalating challenges facing the Middle East region, His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a telephone conversation with His Excellency Ayman Safadi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. This call represents another step in the ongoing coordination and consultation between the two brotherly countries to address regional crises, most notably the dangerous developments in the Gaza Strip.
During their discussions, the two ministers focused on reviewing the latest developments in the region, particularly the diplomatic efforts underway to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza. They emphasized the need for the international community to unite and take immediate and effective action to end the escalating humanitarian crisis and ensure the safe and sustained delivery of relief and medical aid throughout the besieged territory.
Historical background and general context
These talks take place within the context of deep-rooted historical and strategic relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The two countries have long been cornerstones of joint Arab action, sharing similar visions on major regional issues, foremost among them the Palestinian cause. Saudi-Jordanian coordination is based on a long history of shared positions supporting the rights of the Palestinian people and calling for the establishment of their independent state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant UN resolutions.
The importance of the event and its expected impact
These talks are of paramount importance given the pivotal role both countries play in the region. Saudi Arabia, with its political and economic weight, is leading extensive diplomatic efforts to garner international support for ending the war and preventing its escalation. Jordan, for its part, by virtue of its geographic location and historical role as custodian of the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, possesses direct influence and vital channels of communication. Unifying their positions sends a powerful message to the international community about the Arab consensus on the necessity of achieving stability and ending the occupation as the only path to lasting peace. These coordinated efforts are expected to increase diplomatic pressure on international actors to take serious steps toward a comprehensive and just political solution.
