Strengthening Saudi-Korean relations: An important message for the Foreign Minister

Strengthening Saudi-Korean relations in a written message from the Foreign Minister

In a diplomatic move underscoring the depth of Saudi-Korean relations, His Royal Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, received a written message from His Excellency Mr. Cho Tae-yeol, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. The message focused on ways to strengthen and develop cooperation and the strategic partnership between the two friendly countries in various fields. The message was delivered by His Excellency Mr. Choi Byung-hyuk, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Kingdom, during a meeting with Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Rassi, Undersecretary for Multilateral International Affairs and General Supervisor of the Ministry's Agency for Economic and Development Affairs, at the Ministry's headquarters in Riyadh.

A strategic partnership spanning more than six decades

This message represents another link in the chain of ongoing communication between Riyadh and Seoul, a relationship that dates back to 1962, the year formal diplomatic relations were established. This relationship is not a recent development, but rather one built on solid foundations of shared interests and mutual respect. In the 1970s and 80s, Korean companies played a pivotal role in implementing massive infrastructure projects in the Kingdom, while Saudi Arabia was a reliable partner in supplying Korea with the energy necessary for its industrial development. This partnership has evolved from a traditional economic relationship based on oil for construction to a comprehensive and multifaceted strategic alliance encompassing political, economic, cultural, and defense spheres.

Vision 2030: A catalyst for deepening Saudi-Korean relations

This diplomatic engagement comes at a crucial time, as the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 represents a historic turning point, opening unprecedented horizons for cooperation. The Kingdom views South Korea as a key strategic partner in achieving the goals of this ambitious vision, given its global expertise in advanced technology, defense industries, digital transformation, renewable energy, and entertainment. The “Saudi-Korean Vision 2030 Committee” was established as an institutional framework to coordinate efforts and identify joint projects in vital sectors such as energy, manufacturing, smart infrastructure, and healthcare. These discussions are expected to accelerate the implementation of joint projects, including collaboration on mega-projects like NEOM, thereby enhancing the two countries’ standing on the international stage and bringing economic benefits to their people.

During the meeting, ways to enhance cooperation between the two friendly countries were reviewed, in addition to discussing key regional and international issues of mutual interest. This diplomatic exchange underscores the commitment of both countries' leadership to further developing bilateral relations to broader levels, serving their common interests and contributing to the strengthening of security and stability at both the regional and global levels.
