This expression of condolence reaffirms the depth of the fraternal relations and historical ties that bind the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
Historical context and Hadi's political career
Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi is a pivotal figure in modern Yemeni history, his political career marked by dramatic shifts. He assumed the presidency in February 2012 following a symbolic election in which he was the sole candidate, as part of a Gulf Cooperation Council initiative aimed at ending the turmoil that followed the 2011 Yemeni youth uprising and the resignation of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Hadi was intended to lead a two-year transitional period paving the way for a new constitution and inclusive elections.
Formidable challenges and a turbulent era
Hadi’s presidency faced immense challenges from day one, including deep political divisions, security threats from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a rising separatist movement in the south, and a Houthi-led rebellion in the north. The crisis reached its peak in September 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital, Sana’a, and placed President Hadi under house arrest, plunging the country into a new phase of conflict. Hadi later escaped to Aden, which he declared the temporary capital, before fleeing to Riyadh in March 2015 as Houthi forces advanced, requesting military intervention from the Saudi-led Arab coalition.
The importance of the event and its expected impact
Although Hadi had transferred his full powers to the Presidential Leadership Council in April 2022, his death represents a symbolic end to a complex political phase. Domestically, his passing closes the chapter on the president who led the legitimate Yemeni government for over a decade in the face of the Houthi coup. Regionally and internationally, the message of condolence from the Saudi leadership underscores the Kingdom's continued support for the legitimate Yemeni government, currently represented by the Presidential Leadership Council, and reinforces its diplomatic position as a key player striving to achieve stability and peace in Yemen in accordance with internationally agreed-upon frameworks.
