Media regulator summons violators of content that threatens national security

The General Authority for Media Regulation in Saudi Arabia announced that it has taken legal action against 49 individuals after detecting 68 violations in the content they publish on their various social media accounts. The Authority explained that it summoned the administrators of these accounts to take the necessary measures, emphasizing that the offending content directly affects public order and national security.

Legal framework for procedures

These measures are based on Article 5, Paragraph (12) of the Audiovisual Media Law, which explicitly prohibits “publishing anything that could disrupt public order, national security, or the requirements of the public interest.” The Authority emphasized its seriousness in dealing with these cases, stating that all observed violations have been referred to the relevant committees within the Ministry of Media for review and the application of the prescribed penalties. The Authority affirmed that it will not hesitate to exercise its powers to protect the digital space from any harmful content or misleading campaigns that may target the stability of society.

General context and importance of digital organization

This step comes within the framework of the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to regulate the digital space, which is widely used by citizens and residents. Saudi Arabia is among the world's leading countries in social media usage rates. With this widespread use, challenges have emerged related to the dissemination of rumors, misinformation, and content that incites discord or undermines national values. The Media Regulatory Authority, in cooperation with other relevant bodies, is working to implement legal frameworks such as the Audiovisual Media Law and the Anti-Cybercrime Law to ensure a safe and responsible digital environment that aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 in building a vibrant society and a thriving economy.

Expected impact on the media landscape

These measures are expected to have a deterrent effect on social media users, particularly influencers and content creators, thereby increasing awareness of the legal responsibilities associated with digital publishing. Domestically, this step aims to strengthen social cohesion and protect the national fabric from extremist ideologies and hate speech. Regionally, these measures align with similar Gulf and Arab initiatives to regulate cyberspace and address shared security challenges, reinforcing the importance of digital sovereignty for nations in safeguarding their national security and vital interests.
