Saudi Arabia delivers cholera control supplies to Hadramawt Health Department

As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing humanitarian efforts to support the brotherly Yemeni people, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center delivered a new shipment of various medical supplies to the Ministry of Public Health and Population office in the Hadramawt coast. This strategic step aims to maximize the preparedness of health facilities and enhance their capacity for a rapid and effective response to suspected and confirmed cases of cholera.

Details of Saudi support for combating epidemics

This aid falls under the "Urgent Cholera Response in Yemen" project, a vital initiative aimed at containing the epidemic before it spreads. The Secretary-General of the Hadramawt Governorate Local Council, Saleh Aboud Al-Amqi, praised this urgent humanitarian intervention, emphasizing that these supplies directly contribute to containing the epidemic and limiting its spread in the targeted areas. Al-Amqi explained that the support is not limited to shipments of medicine, but rather represents a comprehensive package aimed at improving the operational efficiency of health facilities. He expressed his deep gratitude to the Kingdom and its humanitarian arm, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, for their continued support of Yemen.

Context of the health crisis in Yemen

Yemen’s health sector is facing immense challenges as a result of years of conflict, leading to weakened health infrastructure and a severe shortage of medical supplies. This has left the country vulnerable to recurring outbreaks of epidemics such as cholera. This aid is of paramount importance at this time, serving as a first line of defense to prevent the collapse of the health system in affected areas and providing essential resources for medical personnel to fulfill their duties towards patients. This reflects the deep fraternal ties between the two countries and the Kingdom’s commitment to the stability of the health situation in its southern neighbor.

Project scope and expected impact

The emergency response project is comprehensive, targeting the most affected areas and aiming to reduce mortality and injury rates. Preventive measures within the project include:

  • Providing the necessary medical and therapeutic supplies.
  • Establish and deploy specialized medical teams to examine and monitor travelers.
  • Activating inspection points at air and land ports in key governorates such as Aden and Hadhramaut.

It is estimated that this project will provide services to approximately 1.153 million individuals, making it one of the main pillars in the fight against cholera in Yemen today.

The Kingdom's leading role regionally and internationally

This continued support underscores the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's leading role in international humanitarian work, not only providing food aid but also focusing on sustaining health services. This intervention contributes to strengthening regional health security, as combating epidemics in Yemen prevents their spread across borders, thus benefiting the stability of the entire region. The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre continues to be a vital lifeline, providing essential services to Yemen and enabling them to survive and persevere in the face of crises.
