Formula 1 race in Saudi Arabia postponed: Commitment to the highest safety standards
Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal, Minister of Sport and President of the Saudi Arabian Olympic and Paralympic Committee, affirmed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's unwavering commitment and readiness to host major international sporting events. This statement followed the official decision by the FIA and Formula 1 World Championship management to postpone the fifth round of the Formula 1 Saudi Grand Prix.
The Jeddah Corniche Circuit was scheduled to host this major sporting event from April 17 to 19. However, the organizers explained that the postponement decision was made in response to the current circumstances in the region and out of concern for the safety of all participants and spectators, in accordance with international safety and security standards.
Details of the FIA decision
The postponement decision wasn't limited to the Saudi Grand Prix; the FIA and Formula 1 management also announced the postponement of the Bahrain Grand Prix, which was scheduled for April. In addition to Formula 1, the decision included postponing the support championships, namely Formula 2 and Formula 3, as well as the Formula 1 Academy races. The official statement emphasized that, despite exploring all available alternatives, no changes would be made to the April calendar, reflecting the seriousness with which the current situation is being addressed.
Statements from the Minister of Sports: Full readiness and a future vision
Commenting on this decision, the Minister of Sport issued a press statement reflecting the Kingdom's professionalism in dealing with international developments, saying: “We respect the decision of the FIA and Formula 1 not to hold the race on its scheduled date. We would like to assure the international sporting community that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was and remains fully prepared to host this global race.”.
His Highness added, referring to the Kingdom’s impressive track record: “We have already succeeded in hosting this major event in five previous editions with great success, competence and excellence. The Kingdom will always remain a preferred and trusted destination for athletes and sports enthusiasts from all over the world.”.
Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal continued, emphasizing the importance of the event: “The Formula 1 championship in Saudi Arabia is one of the most important and largest sporting events held in the Kingdom, which we host throughout the year according to the highest and most precise standards of organization, security and safety. We are always pleased to welcome athletes and passionate fans from all over the world.”.
The historical context and strategic importance of hosting Formula 1
Hosting Formula 1 races in Saudi Arabia is an integral part of the comprehensive national strategy stemming from “Saudi Vision 2030”. Since the launch of the first edition of the Saudi Grand Prix in 2021 at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, which is considered the fastest street circuit in the world, the Kingdom has proven its exceptional ability to organize sporting events that exceed expectations and meet the highest international standards.
The anticipated impact of such events extends far beyond the local sporting sphere, reaching broad regional and international horizons. Economically and in terms of tourism, these events contribute to attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors, thus enhancing the Kingdom's position as a global hub for sports tourism. In addition to Formula 1, Saudi Arabia has successfully hosted major international championships in recent years, such as the Dakar Rally, the Spanish and Italian Super Cups, and world boxing matches, confirming that the Kingdom's sports infrastructure is now among the best in the world.
In conclusion, the Saudi position on postponing the race reflects the extent of administrative maturity and commitment to international partnerships, while emphasizing that the Jeddah Corniche circuit will always be ready for the return of the roar of engines, and to welcome speed enthusiasts in ideal conditions that ensure the safety and enjoyment of everyone.
