Launching the ship of His Majesty King Saud: The naval forces inaugurate the Tuwaiq project

In a strategic move reflecting the rapid development of the Saudi Armed Forces, the Royal Saudi Naval Forces launched the "His Majesty King Saud," the first warship in the ambitious "Tuwaiq" project. The launch ceremony took place in Wisconsin, USA, in the presence of the Chief of Staff of the Naval Forces, Vice Admiral Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Gharibi, and with broad participation from senior officers and officials from both the Saudi and American sides, in addition to representatives from the leading defense companies Lockheed Martin and Fincantieri.

Project “Tuwaiq”: A qualitative leap in naval armament

The Tuwaiq project is a cornerstone of the Royal Saudi Naval Forces' development program, encompassing the construction of four multi-mission combat ships (MMSCs). These vessels are equipped with the latest and most advanced combat systems globally, granting them superior capabilities in countering a variety of threats, whether air, surface, or subsurface. This project is part of a long history of close defense cooperation between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States, relying on the transfer and localization of advanced technologies derived from the U.S. Navy's Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) and adapting them to meet the Kingdom's operational needs.

Strategic importance and regional dimensions

The refloating of the ship “His Majesty King Saud” is not only a military achievement, but also carries profound strategic implications on several levels:

• Domestically, the project translates the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to localize more than 50% of military spending. The project is being implemented in cooperation with the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) and the General Authority for Defense Development (GADD), contributing to building a sustainable national defense industrial base and creating job opportunities for Saudi talent.
• On the regional and international level: The acquisition of these ships enhances the readiness of the Saudi naval forces to protect the Kingdom’s strategic interests and secure the vital maritime routes through which global energy supplies pass, especially in light of the increasing security challenges in the region.

Infrastructure development and training

During the ceremony, Lieutenant General Al-Gharibi emphasized that the project extends beyond shipbuilding, encompassing a comprehensive system that includes the development of King Abdulaziz Naval Base in Jubail and the establishment of advanced maintenance and training facilities. This holistic approach ensures sustained combat readiness and enhanced operational efficiency, underscoring the Kingdom's commitment to building a modern and professional naval force capable of effectively and competently addressing future challenges.
