98% accuracy in Hajj weather forecasts: The safety of pilgrims comes first

A remarkable technological achievement in serving the pilgrims

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia announced a remarkable achievement during this year's Hajj season, with its weather forecasts for the Holy Sites achieving over 98% accuracy with actual readings. This record reflects the advanced technology and high level of expertise attained by the specialized national staff, who worked around the clock to ensure the safety and comfort of the pilgrims.

Historical background and importance of weather monitoring during Hajj

Historically, weather conditions in Mecca and the Holy Sites have posed a significant challenge during the Hajj season, particularly given the region's high summer temperatures. Accurate weather forecasts have always been crucial to operational planning for the Hajj. Precise weather information enables relevant authorities to take proactive measures to manage heat stress, guide pilgrims, and provide necessary healthcare services. With the increasing number of pilgrims each year, a sophisticated weather monitoring infrastructure has become essential to ensuring the success of the Hajj season.

Integrated infrastructure and modern technologies

This success was based on a vast and well-planned network of 21 automated weather stations, installed and deployed in the field to provide 100% coverage of the Holy Sites. The locations of these stations were selected based on precise meteorological criteria to ensure the best possible readings. In addition to the ground stations, manned stations were utilized in Mina and Arafat, along with an integrated system of weather radars and satellites that played a pivotal role in standardized monitoring, highly accurate observation of weather phenomena, and documentation of climate data for the Holy Sites.

The role of artificial intelligence in enhancing accuracy

Artificial intelligence techniques used in numerical models have played a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of forecasting future weather phenomena and conditions. These advanced technologies have helped process massive amounts of data and provide accurate, proactive information, directly contributing to decision-making by operational and service entities involved in Hajj operations, thus ensuring the safety of pilgrims.

Local and international impact of the achievement

Domestically, this achievement reinforces the Kingdom's ability to manage one of the world's largest human gatherings efficiently and safely. Internationally, it highlights the Kingdom's commitment to leveraging the latest technologies to serve pilgrims from around the globe and solidifies its position as a leading model in crowd management and major events. The center's outputs during the season included issuing 1,915 detailed weather bulletins, issuing 11 weather alerts, broadcasting over 300 informational and awareness materials, and completing four specialized climate studies to support future planning.
