Passport services for pilgrims: Facilitating procedures for 1.5 million pilgrims with modern technologies
The General Directorate of Passports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced the success of its integrated operational plan for the Hajj season, providing passport services to more than 1.5 million pilgrims arriving through various international ports of entry. The Directorate mobilized all its human and technological resources to ensure smooth procedures at every stage of the pilgrims' journey, from their arrival in the Kingdom until their safe departure after performing their rituals, thus contributing to increased efficiency and the highest quality of service delivery.
These efforts are part of the Kingdom's long and distinguished history of serving the Two Holy Mosques and their visitors. Over the decades, Saudi Arabia has continuously developed its Hajj management system to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims and the accompanying logistical challenges. This year's Hajj season represents the culmination of this accumulated experience, enhanced by the use of cutting-edge technologies, in line with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to enrich the religious and cultural experience of pilgrims and Umrah performers.
Digital transformation enhances the efficiency of passport services for pilgrims
Digital transformation played a pivotal role in the success of passport operations this season. Air, land, and sea ports were equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed with qualified personnel to expedite pilgrim processing. Among the most prominent technologies were electronic gates and mobile counters, which significantly reduced waiting times. The “Makkah Route” initiative also emerged as a leading model for proactive services, enabling pilgrims to complete all entry procedures at their home airports, allowing them to proceed directly to their accommodations upon arrival in the Kingdom without needing to stop at the airport.
A more convenient and safer Hajj experience
The direct impact of this integrated system is reflected positively in the pilgrim's experience, as the smooth and rapid procedures alleviate the burdens of travel and enable pilgrims to focus on the spiritual aspect of their journey. Internationally, these efforts reinforce the Kingdom's position as a leading nation in managing large crowds and gatherings, and present a global model for how to harness technology to serve humanitarian and religious objectives. With the arrival phase complete and pilgrims having performed their rituals, the General Directorate of Passports has begun implementing its plan for the departure phase with the same efficiency and organization, reinforcing departure points with additional personnel and technological equipment to ensure the smooth flow of travel.
A complete system from arrival to departure
The General Directorate of Passports monitors operational and field activities through its Hajj Command and Control Center, which operates around the clock. The center's purpose is to track performance indicators, support rapid decision-making, and ensure immediate response to any changes. It also guarantees effective coordination among various departments and relevant agencies to ensure the continued efficiency of operations. These efforts underscore the General Directorate of Passports' commitment to utilizing all its resources to serve pilgrims, reflecting the Kingdom's leadership's significant support for the guests of God and embodying its security, organizational, and service-oriented role in ensuring the success of the Hajj season each year.
