Saudi Road Code: New Standards for Connecting Vital Centers

The General Authority for Roads announced new details regarding the "Saudi Road Code," which represents a qualitative leap in the engineering and planning of transportation networks within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Authority explained that the code establishes a precise and comprehensive framework for connecting vital centers to the public road network, with the aim of facilitating access and ensuring smooth traffic flow, in accordance with the highest international traffic safety standards.

Strategic context for standardization

The launch and implementation of the Saudi Road Code comes at a time when the Kingdom is witnessing unprecedented developmental momentum within the framework of Vision 2030, where transportation infrastructure is considered a vital artery for achieving sustainable development. Historically, road projects were subject to standards that could vary among different entities. However, the new code unifies these standards, becoming the sole technical reference for all entities, whether ministries, development authorities, or regional and municipal secretariats. This unification ensures a consistent and safe transportation experience for users across the Kingdom's vast and diverse regions.

Classification of vital centers and motion engineering

The authority explained that the new regulations focus primarily on major traffic hubs, such as international and regional airports, medical cities and major hospitals, and universities and educational complexes. The code classifies these facilities according to their importance and traffic volume, ensuring that road design and capacity are appropriate for the anticipated traffic density.

Not only does it address the current situation, but the code requires the relevant authorities to plan the volume of traffic to and from these centers based on future studies, and to link them to the types of roads appropriate to their function, whether they are highways, arterial, collector, or local roads, which ensures faster mobility and reduces traffic congestion at peak times.

Expected economic and social impact

The implementation of this code is expected to have a wide-ranging positive impact. Economically, improved connectivity between vital centers will enhance the efficiency of logistics and reduce travel time, thereby increasing overall productivity. Socially, improved safety and easier access to health and education services will directly impact quality of life, a key pillar of the Quality of Life Program.

Technical reference for the future

The Saudi Road Code is a comprehensive technical reference covering all stages of a road's lifecycle, from planning and design to construction and maintenance. Notably, the code is forward-looking, incorporating environmental considerations to reduce emissions, as well as establishing the necessary infrastructure requirements for autonomous vehicles, thus positioning the Kingdom among the advanced nations prepared for future transportation technologies.

It is worth noting that the code was implemented on a pilot basis last year, became mandatory for government agencies at the beginning of this year, and will be applied to the private sector in the middle of the year, in an effort to bring the Kingdom to sixth place globally in road quality by 2030.
