A Saudi scientific achievement illuminates the sky of global innovation
In a move reflecting the development of the education and scientific research system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Science and Engineering Team achieved a new global accomplishment, adding to the nation's record of achievements. The team won 12 special awards during its outstanding participation in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), according to an announcement by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba). This success demonstrates the ability of young Saudi minds to compete in the most prestigious international scientific forums.
Details of special awards and creative students
The special awards won by the Saudi national team champions were distributed among several prestigious donors. Students Noor Faisal Al-Atwi, Jana Al-Dossari, Lana Abu Talib, Shaima Al-Katani, and Al-Jawhara Bin Zara’a were awarded special prizes presented by Saudi Aramco in recognition of their innovative projects that enhance the national economy and support sustainable development.

Students Lana Al-Aqqad and Lana Abu Talib (who achieved double recognition) also excelled, each receiving a special award from the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST). Excellence wasn't limited to national entities; it extended to international recognition, with student Tamim Ibrahim Khan, representing the Royal Commission Education Department in Jubail, winning a special award from the Missouri University of Science and Technology for his groundbreaking project in microbiology.
General context and historical background of ISEF
The International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is the world’s largest pre-university science competition, bringing together thousands of innovators from around the globe each year to showcase their research and projects. Saudi Arabia’s participation in this global event began in 2007 through a strategic partnership between the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) and the Ministry of Education. Over the years, the Kingdom has demonstrated its excellence in science and technology, winning a total of 185 awards across its previous participations, comprising 124 major awards and 61 special awards. Notably, in the last edition of the fair, Saudi Arabia ranked second globally in the number of major awards, trailing only the United States, reflecting the continuous improvement in the quality of Saudi educational outcomes.
The size of Saudi participation in the current edition
This year's exhibition saw extensive participation from the Saudi Science and Engineering Fair, with a team of 42 outstanding young minds. The participation was diverse, with 23 students attending in person in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, while 17 students competed remotely from Riyadh, the capital, in addition to two students serving as observers. This meticulous organization reflects the commitment of relevant authorities to providing comprehensive support and nurturing for talented students, ensuring a distinguished representation befitting the Kingdom's name.
The importance of the event and its expected impact locally and internationally
This achievement carries profound strategic dimensions that extend far beyond simply winning a competition. Domestically, this success embodies the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the Human Capital Development Program, which aims to cultivate an innovative generation capable of leading the transition to a knowledge-based economy. Furthermore, this victory serves as an inspiring incentive for millions of students in Saudi schools to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
On both regional and international levels, the Saudi team's victory reinforces the Kingdom's position as a leader in innovation in the Arab world and the Middle East. It also sends a powerful message to the international scientific community that Saudi Arabia is no longer merely a consumer of technology, but has become an active partner in knowledge production and in providing innovative scientific solutions to global challenges. The Kingdom's investment in the minds of its youth is the most successful investment, guaranteeing a prosperous and sustainable future for generations to come.
