Banning unauthorized vehicles in the holy sites during Hajj

Saudi Traffic Department announces plan to regulate vehicle traffic in the holy sites for the Hajj season

As part of intensive preparations for the Hajj season, the General Directorate of Traffic in Saudi Arabia announced the implementation of a ban on unauthorized vehicles and motorcycles entering the holy sites, effective from dawn on the fifth day of Dhul-Hijjah. This decisive measure is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims and facilitate their movement during the performance of the rituals with ease and peace of mind.

Hajj security forces are fully prepared

The official spokesperson for the Traffic Department, Colonel Mansour Al-Shakra, affirmed the utmost readiness of the Hajj security forces for traffic management. He explained that the traffic plans for this year's Hajj season are being implemented with complete integration and high-level coordination with various security and service sectors. This joint coordination aims to achieve the highest levels of traffic flow and safety for pilgrims as they move between the holy sites, from the moment of their arrival until they complete all the rituals and depart safely.

Historical context and evolution of crowd management

Historically, Saudi Arabia has placed great importance on crowd management and traffic control during the Hajj season, one of the world's largest annual human gatherings. Over the decades, traffic plans have evolved significantly, transitioning from traditional manual management to reliance on cutting-edge technologies, smart systems, and artificial intelligence. This continuous development reflects the Saudi leadership's commitment to providing a safe and comfortable environment for pilgrims and overcoming any obstacles they may face, particularly traffic congestion, which requires proactive and innovative solutions.

Comprehensive field deployment and precise timelines

Colonel Al-Shakra indicated a comprehensive and intensive deployment of traffic police on all main roads and thoroughfares, as well as within the tunnel network in Mecca, the central area surrounding the Grand Mosque, and the holy sites. He explained that traffic plans are not implemented haphazardly, but rather according to precise and well-planned phases that correspond to the density of crowd movement and travel between the holy sites. The relevant authorities have already begun implementing operational plans early in preparation for the peak, leading up to the activation of the traffic ban on the fifth of Dhul-Hijjah.

Stages of escalation and alienation

The traffic plan includes key phases beginning on the Day of Tarwiyah, the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah, when the movement of pilgrims to Mina is facilitated. This is followed by the most important phase: the ascent to Arafat on the morning of the 9th. After sunset on the Day of Arafat, the plan for the movement of pilgrims from Arafat to Muzdalifah begins, ensuring their smooth transition, and then their return to Mina to complete the stoning ritual during the days of Tashreeq. All these phases require strict traffic management to prevent the entry of unauthorized vehicles and ensure the smooth flow of official buses and pedestrians.

Local and international importance and impact

This meticulous traffic management is of paramount importance on several levels. Locally, it helps alleviate the burden on Makkah's infrastructure and prevents traffic congestion that could impede the arrival of ambulances and emergency vehicles, thus enhancing the efficiency of response to any emergency. Regionally and internationally, the Kingdom's success in managing the movement of millions of pilgrims within a limited geographical area and a short timeframe sends a reassuring message to the entire Muslim world. It underscores Saudi Arabia's exceptional ability to organize major events and manage crowds efficiently and effectively, reflecting the Kingdom's positive and honorable image in serving the Two Holy Mosques.

Colonel Al-Shakra concluded his remarks by emphasizing that all field plans are implemented according to an integrated system between the various parties involved in the Hajj, with the ultimate goal of achieving the highest levels of security, safety and traffic organization, in order to ensure the comfort of the pilgrims of the Sacred House of God.
