These new regulations fall under the umbrella of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, a key pillar of the Kingdom's Vision 2030. This initiative aims to eliminate the haphazard nature of some transportation operations and transform the sector into an attractive and well-regulated investment environment. These regulations are particularly important given the vital role buses play during Hajj and Umrah seasons, as well as the growing domestic tourism sector, which necessitates a safe and reliable transportation system that enhances the experience for visitors and residents.
Strict requirements for drivers and vehicles
A clean criminal record became a non-negotiable condition for any bus driver, in addition to the requirement to pass professional competency tests. The authority went further, setting an operational age limit for buses, prohibiting the operation of any bus older than 10 years from the date of manufacture. This measure aims to ensure efficient mechanical performance and reduce carbon emissions and accidents resulting from technical malfunctions.
Technical control and consumer protection
The regulations also addressed the technical aspects, stipulating the necessity of linking to the Authority's electronic platform.
