Saudi Arabia's youth national team qualifies for the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup

The Saudi Arabian U-17 national team achieved a major milestone by officially qualifying for the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup after securing a valuable and well-deserved 2-0 victory over Thailand. The match was held at the King Abdullah Sports City auxiliary stadium in Jeddah, as part of the second round of Group A matches in the AFC U-17 Championship, currently being hosted by the Kingdom.

The young Saudi team entered the match with a clear determination to secure early qualification, a goal they achieved from the opening minutes. In the fourth minute, the talented striker Marwan Al-Yami opened the scoring with a well-placed header, capitalizing on a defensive mix-up to make his mark on the game and give the Saudi team the lead. Despite Thailand's attempts to equalize, especially before the end of the first half, goalkeeper Abdullah Al-Mas's alertness prevented them from doing so, as he brilliantly saved a dangerous opportunity that could have leveled the score. In the second minute of second-half stoppage time, Hassan Al-Akroush extinguished any Thai hopes by scoring the second goal after a decisive pass from his teammate Abdullah Al-Batli, securing the three points and a ticket to the World Cup.

General context and importance of the Asian Championship

The AFC U-16 Championship is the main gateway for Asian teams to the world's premier tournament for this age group. The top four teams qualify directly for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, making every match crucial. This qualification underscores the significant work being done by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation's youth national teams department, which aims to build strong generations capable of representing Saudi football in the future.

A historical legacy and a promising future

This achievement brings to mind the rich historical legacy of Saudi youth football, most notably the 1989 FIFA U-17 World Cup victory in Scotland – a feat unmatched by any other Asian or Arab team to this day. The qualification of this new generation represents a continuation of that legacy and sends a powerful message that Saudi Arabia remains a wellspring of footballing talent. Participating in a tournament of the magnitude of the World Cup will provide these young players with invaluable experience and hone their skills through exposure to diverse global footballing styles, thus accelerating their development and positioning them as the future core of the senior national team, in line with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 for developing the sports sector.

With this result, the Saudi national team raised its tally to six points at the top of the group, ahead of the Tajikistani national team on goal difference, which also secured its qualification. Both teams thus booked their places in the quarter-finals of the Asian Championship, and more importantly, in the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup finals.
