Weather in Saudi Arabia: Winds, dust, and warnings from the meteorological service

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued its daily weather report, forecasting continued surface wind activity that will stir up dust and sand across large parts of the Kingdom, leading to reduced horizontal visibility. Warnings were issued for parts of the Eastern Province, Riyadh, Qassim, Hail, Tabuk, Madinah, and Makkah.

Background of weather phenomena in the Arabian Peninsula

Dust storms and strong winds are a frequent weather phenomenon in Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula in general. This is due to its geography, which includes vast desert areas such as the Rub' al Khali and the Great Nafud, which are major sources of dust and sand. The region is affected by varying atmospheric pressure systems throughout the year, and winds, especially the seasonal northerly winds, become active when atmospheric pressure differences increase. This leads to the carrying of large quantities of dust and sand over long distances, affecting cities and populated areas.

Expected effects and the importance of warnings

These weather phenomena have direct impacts on various aspects of life. From a health perspective, the dust storms pose a risk to those with respiratory conditions such as asthma and allergies, who are always advised to stay indoors and avoid going out unless absolutely necessary. Regarding transportation, reduced visibility increases the danger of driving on highways, prompting warnings from security authorities to exercise caution. Air traffic at some airports may also be affected, potentially leading to delays or rescheduling of flights to ensure passenger safety.

Forecast details and affected areas

According to the weather report, there remains a chance of thunderstorms with rain and active winds over parts of the highlands of Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and Makkah regions. Regarding the Eastern Province, the center issued a special warning for active winds and dust storms starting at 9:00 AM and continuing until 6:00 PM. These conditions will reduce horizontal visibility, with wind speeds potentially reaching 40 to 49 kilometers per hour in areas such as Jubail, Khobar, Dammam, Qatif, and Ras Tanura. The warning also includes Al-Ahsa, Al-Udayd, Abqaiq, Khafji, and Al-Nairiyah, where visibility is expected to decrease by 3 to 5 kilometers.

Red Sea situation

Surface winds are expected to be northwesterly to northerly at 15-40 km/h in the northern and central parts, and northwesterly to westerly at 12-30 km/h in the southern part. Wave height will be 1-2 meters in the northern and central parts, and 0.5-1.5 meters in the southern part, with sea conditions ranging from slight to moderate.

Arabian Gulf situation

Surface winds will be northwesterly to northerly at a speed of 20-40 km/h, with wave heights ranging from one to two meters, making the sea state moderately rough.
