Saudi Arabia weather: First cold wave reaches near zero, and warnings of flash floods

The National Center for Meteorology issued an important warning regarding the rapidly changing weather patterns affecting the Kingdom, announcing the imminent arrival of the first significant cold wave of the winter season. This wave is expected to hit the Kingdom by the end of this week, with initial forecasts indicating a sharp drop in temperatures that could reach freezing , particularly in the northern regions, which are typically the first point of entry for cold air masses from the north.
Weather conditions and cold wave details
The official spokesperson for the National Center for Meteorology, Hussein bin Mohammed Al-Qahtani, explained that this wave follows a widespread rain event that began on Sunday and will continue until next Thursday, covering all 13 regions of the Kingdom. Al-Qahtani confirmed that the center is preparing a detailed report outlining the expected temperature drop, which will range from moderate to very cold during the night, particularly in the northern and central regions, and parts of the western and southern highlands.
The geographical and climatic context of the Kingdom
These warnings come in the context of the usual seasonal shift in the Arabian Peninsula's climate. The northern regions of the Kingdom (such as Tabuk, Al-Jawf, and the Northern Borders) are characterized by a geography that makes them more susceptible to the influence of Siberian high-pressure systems and polar air masses. This drop in temperatures is not merely a passing event, but rather the official announcement of the arrival of harsh winter weather, necessitating changes in the daily lives of residents in terms of clothing and heating methods.
Expected effects and safety guidelines
The impact of this weather system extends beyond just the feeling of cold; it encompasses other vital aspects of life. The center noted the possibility of frost in the early morning hours, posing a risk to the agricultural sector and crops in northern regions, in addition to its direct impact on traffic flow on highways. Therefore, the center urged citizens and residents to exercise caution, adhere to public safety guidelines, and follow weather reports through official channels to avoid any potential hazards resulting from the weather fluctuations.
Monday's weather forecast: rain and floods
Regarding the ongoing rainy conditions, the center's report for Monday predicted continued moderate to heavy thunderstorms, potentially leading to flash floods, accompanied by hail and strong, dust-raising winds. This weather pattern will affect large parts of the Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, Makkah, Riyadh, Qassim, Hail, and Eastern Province regions. Meanwhile, light to moderate rain is expected in the Madinah, Tabuk, Al-Jawf, and Northern Borders regions, with a chance of fog that may reduce horizontal visibility.
