Saudi Arabia's weather in February: Above-average rainfall and high temperatures

The National Center for Meteorology issued its climate forecast for February, revealing expected weather patterns that indicate significant changes compared to usual annual averages. The report included positive indicators regarding rainfall levels, along with an expected rise in surface temperatures across most regions of the Kingdom.

Rainfall forecast: Above normal

According to climate forecast outputs, there is a probability of up to 55% that February will see above-average rainfall. This heavy to moderate rainfall is expected to be concentrated in several key areas, including:

  • Parts of the central area of Medina.
  • The Eastern Province and parts of the central Qassim region.
  • East and parts of central and northern Hail region.
  • The Northern Borders and Al-Jawf regions.
  • Parts of the north and north of the Riyadh region and the Eastern Province.

In contrast, rainfall rates are expected to remain around their normal levels in the rest of the Kingdom, without any sharp weather changes regarding rainfall.

High temperatures and wind activity

Regarding temperatures, the center explained that forecasts indicate a 70% probability of average surface temperatures exceeding the normal average across all regions of the Kingdom. This increase is expected to reach its highest point at approximately 1.4 degrees Celsius in specific areas, including parts of the southern and southwestern Eastern Province, southeast of Riyadh, and the eastern and central parts of the Jazan region.

The report also addressed wind patterns, noting expectations of increased surface wind speeds, particularly in the south, central, eastern, and northern regions of the Kingdom. Climate models indicate an increase of up to 0.9 m/s in the southern and eastern regions, with southerly to southeasterly winds prevailing.

The climatic context of February in Saudi Arabia

February is a crucial transitional month in the Arabian Peninsula's climate, typically marking the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Historically, this period is characterized by rapid weather changes and is known locally as the start of the "Scorpion" season, marked by alternating periods of sudden cold and warmth, along with opportunities for the formation of cumulonimbus clouds and rain.

Rainfall at this time is of great importance to the desert environment in the Kingdom, as it contributes to the growth of spring pastures and increases the water reserves in dams and valleys, which has a positive impact on the agricultural and pastoral season.

Recommendations and warnings

In conclusion, the National Center for Meteorology stressed the need to follow daily weather bulletins and early warnings, given the possibility that some areas may be affected by weather instability that could lead to flash floods and torrents, calling on everyone to take precautions and follow the safety guidelines issued by the competent authorities.
