Saudi Arabia weather today: Thunderstorms and flash floods in 9 regions

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued its daily weather for Sunday, indicating the continuation of the unstable weather conditions currently affecting the Kingdom during this transitional period. The report forecasts moderate to heavy thunderstorms, which may lead to flash floods in valleys and ravines, accompanied by hail and strong winds that will stir up dust and reduce horizontal visibility.

Areas affected by the rainy weather

The center explained in its statement that the weather system will directly affect large parts of the Kingdom, including the regions of Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, Makkah, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province . Rainfall is also expected in parts of Najran , while light rain is forecast for parts of Madinah and Qassim . This weather pattern is typical for this time of year, as the Arabian Peninsula is affected by low-pressure systems that contribute to atmospheric instability.

Surface winds and fog

In addition to the rain, the meteorological department warned of active surface winds stirring up dust and sand, which could negatively affect horizontal visibility on highways and open areas, especially in parts of the aforementioned regions, extending to parts of the Northern Borders region, Al-Jawf, and the coastal areas of Tabuk . The report also did not rule out the formation of fog during the night and early morning hours, urging drivers to exercise caution.

State of the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf

Regarding the marine conditions, the report provided detailed information on wave and wind movement:

  • The Red Sea: Northwesterly to northerly surface winds are expected at speeds of 22-43 km/h, gusting up to 50 km/h, with thunderstorms and rain developing over the central and southern parts. Wave heights will range from 1 to 2 meters, potentially reaching 2.5 meters, resulting in moderate to rough sea conditions.
  • Arabian Gulf: Surface winds will be southeasterly to southerly at 15-40 km/h, reaching 45 km/h with thunderstorms. Wave height will range from half a meter to one and a half meters, potentially reaching two and a half meters, resulting in a slight to moderate sea state, becoming rough during thunderstorms.

The relevant authorities, including the Civil Defense, call on citizens and residents to follow official weather bulletins and stay away from flood channels and valleys during rainfall, in order to preserve public safety in light of these fluctuating weather conditions.
