Saudi Arabia's weather on Saturday: Rain, fog, and dust-raising winds

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued weather for Saturday, indicating unstable weather conditions affecting several regions of the Kingdom. The center warned of fluctuating weather patterns, including rainfall, fog formation, and surface winds that may reduce horizontal visibility.

Weather details and affected areas

According to the official statement issued by the Meteorology Department, there remains a chance of scattered rainfall, sometimes thundery, over the western and southwestern parts of the Kingdom. These areas typically include the highlands of Asir, Jazan, and Al-Baha, and occasionally extend to the highlands of Makkah. This rainy weather coincides with a high probability of dense fog during the night and early morning hours, necessitating caution for drivers on highways and in mountainous areas.

In a related context, the center warned of the impact of active winds stirring up dust and sand, which are expected to significantly reduce horizontal visibility. The areas affected by these winds include parts of the Hail and Madinah regions, as well as the western parts of the Riyadh region, with the effects extending to the eastern parts of the Makkah and Asir regions.

State of the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf

Regarding the maritime situation, the report provided the following details:

  • The Red Sea: Northwesterly to northerly surface winds are expected in the northern and central parts, while southeasterly to southerly winds are expected in the southern part. Winds will occasionally reach speeds of up to 50 km/h, accompanied by thunderstorms and rain, leading to wave heights of 1 to 2.5 meters. Sea conditions will be rough in the central and southern parts.
  • Arabian Gulf: The winds will be northwesterly at a moderate speed, and the wave height will range between one and two meters, with a light to moderate sea state.

The context of weather forecasting and the importance of warnings

These reports are of paramount importance given the great geographical diversity of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where different regions are affected by varying climatic systems. While the southwestern highlands experience a humid and rainy climate due to their mountainous terrain and exposure to low-pressure systems, the central and northern regions face a desert climate, making them susceptible to strong winds and dust storms, especially during the transitional periods between seasons.

Weather experts emphasize that following these forecasts is essential for public safety, as these fluctuations directly impact land travel and maritime navigation. The General Directorate of Civil Defense typically advises citizens and residents to stay away from floodplains and valleys during rainfall and to exercise caution while driving in dusty conditions to ensure the safety of lives and property.
