Saudi Arabia weather: Tabuk records 4 degrees, dust covers Riyadh and the Eastern Province
Several regions in Saudi Arabia experienced a significant drop in temperatures during the early morning hours, with Tabuk recording the lowest temperature at 4 degrees Celsius, reflecting the peak of the winter weather currently affecting the northern regions. Tabuk was not alone in this decrease; Hail and Taif followed suit, registering 5 degrees Celsius, indicating the extension of the cold air mass to include the western highlands and the north-central regions.
In other cities, Abha, Khamis Mushait, Al Qurayyat, and Tarif recorded temperatures of 6 degrees Celsius, a level that necessitates wearing heavy winter clothing, especially for children and the elderly. Meanwhile, in Al-Ula, Al-Baha, Al-Dawadmi, and Al-Qassim, temperatures remained at 7 degrees Celsius, confirming the widespread cold weather affecting large parts of the Kingdom.
Accompanying weather phenomena: wind and dust
According to the National Center for Meteorology's weather forecast for Tuesday, December 30, the drop in temperatures is not the only influencing weather element. Dust-raising surface winds are expected to continue, God willing. This weather pattern will significantly reduce horizontal visibility, especially on highways and in open areas in parts of Al-Jawf and the Northern Borders regions, with effects extending to Hail, Al-Qassim, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province.
Chance of rain and fog
Meanwhile, there remains a chance of light rain that may bring some relief to parts of northern Saudi Arabia. This rain will coincide with the possibility of dense fog during the night and early morning hours, which could significantly reduce visibility. The fog warning covers parts of the northern regions, as well as the southwestern highlands of the Jazan and Asir regions.
Geographical and climatic context
These weather fluctuations are a natural part of the Kingdom's winter climate, as northern regions (such as Tabuk, Al-Qurayyat, and Tarif) are directly affected by air masses originating from the eastern Mediterranean and Europe, consistently experiencing the lowest temperatures. Conversely, the mountainous terrain of Taif and Asir plays a pivotal role in lowering temperatures, despite their southern geographical location.
Public safety recommendations
Given these conditions, citizens and residents are advised to exercise caution, especially drivers on highways connecting Riyadh to the Eastern Province or on northern roads, due to the possibility of reduced visibility caused by dust or fog. It is also recommended to follow current weather forecasts issued by official authorities to avoid any unexpected weather events while traveling.
