Saudi Arabia weather: Dust storm warnings in Najran and heavy rain in Al-Baha

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued today a series of advanced warnings regarding weather fluctuations affecting a number of regions, most notably the Najran and Al-Baha regions, calling on residents to take precautions and follow the guidelines issued by the concerned authorities.

Dust storms and reduced visibility in Najran

In detail, the center warned of surface wind activity that will stir up dust and sand in the Najran region, causing a significant decrease in horizontal visibility, potentially dropping to between 3 and 5 kilometers. The report indicated that this weather condition will affect the city of Najran and the governorates of Badr Al-Janoub, Thar, Habuna, Khubash, and Yadma. The center noted that this warning will remain in effect until 9:00 PM, urging drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads, especially highways, and to avoid speeding.

Thunderstorms and potential flash floods in Al-Baha

On another note, the center warned of moderate to light rainfall in the Al-Baha region, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms. This rainfall will be accompanied by strong winds that may lead to near-zero visibility, in addition to the possibility of flash floods in valleys and ravines, hail, and lightning activity. The affected areas include Al-Baha city and the governorates of Al-Qura, Al-Mandaq, Baljurashi, Bani Hassan, Al-Makhwah, Qalwah, Al-Aqiq, Al-Hajrah, and Ghamid Al-Zanad, as well as surrounding areas. This weather system is expected to remain in effect until 8:00 PM.

Climate context and the importance of warnings

These weather fluctuations are part of the Kingdom's typical climate pattern, especially during seasonal transitions. Southern regions like Najran, with their desert landscape, are prone to dust storms, while the southwestern highlands, such as Al-Baha, are characterized by their mountainous terrain, which contributes to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds and seasonal rainfall. The National Center for Meteorology plays a vital role in monitoring these phenomena and issuing early warnings, thus helping to protect lives and property and reduce potential risks.

Expected effects and calls for caution

These weather phenomena have direct impacts on public safety and health. Dust storms can cause respiratory problems, especially for those with asthma, allergies, and the elderly. Heavy rains and flash floods pose a risk to traffic and increase the likelihood of accidents, as well as threatening the safety of those picnicking in open areas and valleys. The Civil Defense Directorate continuously emphasizes the need to stay away from floodplains and water accumulations, and to follow weather updates from official sources to ensure everyone's safety.
