Complete Slaughterhouse Control: A Comprehensive Plan for Meat Safety During Ramadan

As part of intensive preparations for the holy month of Ramadan, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture office in Al-Kamil Governorate, represented by the Markets and Slaughterhouses Department, conducted a comprehensive field campaign on Monday, August 21, 1447 AH. This campaign aimed to assess the readiness of the governorate's slaughterhouse and ensure its compliance with all necessary health and technical requirements to handle the anticipated increase in demand during the holy month.

High-level directives to raise readiness

These inspection tours are being conducted in accordance with the directives of His Excellency the Director General of the Ministry's branch in the Makkah Region, Engineer Waleed bin Ibrahim Al-Dughais, and under the direct supervision and field monitoring of the Director of the Ministry's office in Al-Kamil Governorate, Dr. Mahmoud bin Saeed Al-Ghamdi. Through these measures, the Ministry aims to ensure the provision of high-quality services to beneficiaries and to provide a safe and healthy environment for meat handling, in line with the Ministry's strategy to enhance food security and public health.

The importance of monitoring before the Ramadan season

This heightened regulatory mobilization is particularly important given the significant increase in demand for red meat that Saudi markets typically experience before and during the holy month of Ramadan. Inspection teams are working to ensure that all slaughtering operations are conducted under strict veterinary supervision, from a visual inspection of livestock before slaughter to confirm they are free of infectious diseases, to post-slaughter examination of the meat to guarantee its suitability for human consumption. These measures represent the first line of defense in protecting consumers from zoonotic diseases.

Strict standards and full compliance

Dr. Mahmoud Al-Ghamdi explained that the operational plan for the current season focuses on several key areas, most notably:

  • Checking operational readiness: Ensuring the efficiency of equipment and the cleanliness of slaughterhouses and waiting areas.
  • Applying health requirements: Obligating operators and workers to adhere to personal and professional health standards.
  • Waste management: Ensuring the safe disposal of slaughterhouse waste in environmentally friendly ways that prevent pollution and pest infestation.

Al-Ghamdi stressed that the specialized teams will continue their inspection tours periodically and intensively throughout the days of the holy month, stressing that no leniency will be shown towards any violations that may affect the health and safety of food, and that deterrent regulatory procedures will be applied to violators immediately.

Community partnership in oversight

In closing, the director of the ministry's office called upon all citizens and residents to actively participate in community oversight, recognizing them as essential partners in the success of these efforts. He urged everyone to report any observations regarding service quality or health violations at slaughterhouses or points of sale through the ministry's official channels, emphasizing that ensuring the safety of Ramadan meals is a shared responsibility aimed at protecting public health for all.
