Strategic alliance to secure food supply chains in Saudi Arabia
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture's efforts to secure food supply chains
In a strategic move aimed at bolstering economic and social stability, the Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Engineer Mansour Al-Mashiti, chaired a comprehensive virtual meeting to establish a robust alliance focused on securing and enhancing the efficiency of food supply chains in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This alliance, with the active participation of both government and private entities, will ensure the sustainability of agricultural production and increase self-sufficiency rates, directly aligning with the ambitious goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
Historical context and the importance of food security in the Kingdom
Historically, Saudi Arabia has faced geographical and climatic challenges, including water scarcity and desert terrain, making reliance on imports for food security a reality for decades. However, the wise leadership, particularly in light of successive global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions that impacted global trade, recognized the necessity of building an independent and resilient national food security system. From this understanding, the National Agricultural Strategy was launched, shifting from simply meeting basic needs to building a sustainable agricultural sector based on modern technologies and innovation, thus making securing food supply chains an imperative, not merely an option.
Strategic partnership between the public and private sectors
The coordination meeting witnessed broad and significant participation from the heads of specialized committees within the Federation of Saudi Chambers, along with prominent government bodies playing a pivotal role in this sector, such as the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, the General Authority for Food Security, and the National Center for Plant Pest and Animal Disease Prevention and Control (Wiqa’). The attendees discussed mechanisms for coordinating joint efforts between the public and private sectors, aiming to implement best agricultural practices that ensure the stability of local markets and efficiently meet consumer needs.
Developing logistics operations and sustaining supplies
The discussions focused intensively on facilitating the flow of food products to and from the Kingdom and coordinating complex logistical operations, particularly those related to animal feed, which is crucial for livestock production. Participants also discussed the importance of establishing an effective government communication network to ensure the sustainability of supplies and address any unforeseen challenges that might hinder the delivery of agricultural products to the end user. This logistical coordination will minimize food loss and waste and expedite the arrival of fresh produce to markets.
Economic impact: locally, regionally, and internationally
Domestically, participants commended the unlimited government support that has resulted in significant progress in record time. The agricultural sector's contribution to the GDP jumped to 114 billion riyals by the end of 2024, reflecting the creation of new job opportunities and a boost to the economic cycle. Furthermore, several agricultural crops and local products achieved historic levels of self-sufficiency, exceeding 100%, such as dates, dairy products, and some poultry products, thus strengthening national food security.
Regionally and internationally, this alliance positions the Kingdom among the leading nations in resource management and securing supply chains in arid environments. Reducing reliance on imports alleviates pressure on global supply chains and makes the Saudi experience a model to be emulated in the Middle East, thereby enhancing regional stability and supporting international efforts to achieve global food security.
