Security alert in Tabuk as snow falls on Jabal al-Lawz
The Special Security and Protection Forces have intensified their field operations and increased their deployment in the Tabuk region, particularly on the roads leading to Jabal al-Lawz, coinciding with the current weather conditions and snowfall that has blanketed the mountain peaks in white. These proactive measures come in response to reports from the National Center for Meteorology indicating a sharp drop in temperatures and favorable conditions for snowfall.
The forces reinforced their security patrols at all entrances and exits leading to winter tourist sites, providing safety instructions and managing the heavy traffic caused by hikers and photographers. The field command confirmed its full readiness to deal with any emergency resulting from the weather fluctuations, urging everyone to adhere to instructions and avoid rugged areas or floodplains to ensure public safety.
Jabal Al-Lawz: An Icon of Saudi Winter
Jabal Al-Lawz, rising to approximately 2,549 meters above sea level, is one of the most important geographical and tourist landmarks in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The mountain takes its name from the almond trees that once grew there and represents a unique climatic phenomenon in the Arabian Peninsula. It is one of the few areas that receives snow annually, making it a favorite destination for thousands of visitors from within the Kingdom and the Gulf countries.
Historically, this region has been linked to ancient caravan routes and rock carvings dating back to bygone eras, but in recent years it has transformed into a major tourist attraction during Saudi Arabia's winter season. This shift has made it essential to intensify security and service presence to ensure a safe tourist experience, especially given the growing global and local interest in NEOM and its surrounding areas.
Tourism and economic implications
The impact of snowfall in Tabuk extends beyond the environmental sphere, encompassing significant economic and tourism dimensions. The snow season generates considerable economic activity in the region, boosting the hospitality sector, winter equipment rentals, and mobile food vendors. This annual event showcases the diverse climate of Saudi Arabia, supporting the goals of Vision 2030 to promote domestic tourism and establish the Kingdom as a world-class tourist destination with diverse landscapes.
Weather warnings and ongoing preparedness
For its part, the National Center for Meteorology, in its ongoing weather report, warned of continued chances of light to moderate snowfall in the highlands of the Tabuk region, accompanied by active winds and reduced horizontal visibility. The center indicated that temperatures may reach or drop below freezing during the night and early morning hours, increasing the likelihood of frost formation on roads.
In this context, experts and security authorities advise drivers to exercise extreme caution while driving on slippery mountain roads, to ensure that vehicles are ready for harsh winter conditions, and to follow continuous updates via the “Anwaa” application and official sources to avoid any potential risks.
