Saudi Arabia bans poultry imports from northern Denmark due to bird flu

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has issued a decision imposing a temporary ban on the import of poultry meat, table eggs, and all related products and equipment from North Denmark County in Denmark. This swift action comes in response to international health reports warning of veterinary health risks in that region.

This decisive precautionary measure was taken following an immediate notification report from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), which confirmed outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in the aforementioned Danish province. The authority aims, through this decision, to prevent the introduction of any pathogens that could harm local livestock or pose a risk to public health in the Kingdom.

Exceptions and technical conditions

In order to balance public health and ensure the continued flow of safe goods, the Authority's decision exempted from this temporary ban products that have undergone thorough heat treatment. The Authority clarified that poultry meat and table eggs that have been heat-treated in a manner sufficient to completely eliminate the avian influenza virus are permitted entry, provided they comply with the approved health requirements and standards, and are accompanied by official health certificates from Denmark confirming they are free of the virus or have been heat-treated.

Disease context and international protocols

Avian influenza is a highly contagious viral disease that significantly impacts the global poultry sector, causing substantial economic losses for producing countries. Member states of the World Trade Organization and the World Organisation for Animal Health follow strict protocols when outbreaks occur, including temporary lockdowns of affected areas to prevent cross-border transmission, which is entirely consistent with the Kingdom's current measures.

The regulatory role and consumer protection

This decision reflects the vigilance of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) and its pivotal role in monitoring global food risks through its Rapid Alert System. These steps underscore the commitment of relevant authorities in Saudi Arabia to providing safe and healthy food for citizens and residents by applying the highest quality and safety standards to all food imports, thereby enhancing consumer confidence in products available in local markets.
