The Gifted Shehem Initiative: The Ministry of Education's Leadership Development Program

In a significant step reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to developing human capital, the Ministry of Education launched the "Shahem Al-Mawhoob" initiative, an ambitious program aimed at honing the leadership and social skills of a select group of gifted male and female students. The initiative moves beyond traditional classrooms to experiential learning spaces in safe and structured outdoor environments, drawing inspiration from the latest global educational theories.

National context and ambitious vision

This initiative comes within the framework of implementing the objectives of the "Human Capabilities Development Program," one of the programs of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which seeks to prepare globally competitive citizens. Historically, gifted programs have often focused on purely academic and scientific aspects. However, the Ministry of Education's modern approach recognizes that intellectual intelligence alone is insufficient for creating leaders. Therefore, "Shahm Al-Mawhoob" (The Gifted Youth) was launched to bridge the gap between academic excellence and soft life skills, such as leadership, teamwork, and psychological resilience—skills that have become cornerstones of the 21st century.

A global methodology in a local environment

The initiative is based on the global "Outward Bound" methodology, a long-established school of outdoor education that focuses on experiential and adventure-based learning. Through this methodology, the initiative offers practical experiences via carefully designed activities and adventures aimed at:

  • Building an independent personality and boosting self-confidence.
  • Developing effective communication and decision-making skills under pressure.
  • To instill the values of discipline, responsibility, and initiative.

Geography of the Kingdom as an open semester

The initiative leverages the unique geographical diversity of Saudi Arabia to transform it into inspiring learning environments. It aims to conduct 20 educational trips with the participation of 600 gifted male and female students, distributed across strategic locations including:

  • Central Region: King Khalid Reserve, where the desert nature teaches patience and endurance.
  • The northern region: King Salman Reserve, with its ancient history and diverse terrain.
  • Western region: Al-Shafa Heights in Taif, where the atmosphere encourages contemplation and challenge.
  • The southern region: Tanomah in Asir, with its picturesque mountainous nature that promotes physical and mental fitness.

Expected impact and future of talent

This initiative is expected to have a profound impact not only locally but also regionally, by presenting a pioneering Saudi model for nurturing talent that blends tradition and modernity. Preparing a confident generation, capable of leadership and collaboration, and qualified to interact positively with their community, will directly contribute to supplying vital sectors in the Kingdom with future leaders possessing psychological and professional balance, thus enhancing the Kingdom's position as a hub for innovation and human creativity.
