Shaqra General Hospital saves a child's hand from amputation after a serious injury
Shaqra General Hospital recorded a new medical success story that adds to the record of achievements of the health sector in the Kingdom, after the orthopedic surgery team was able to save the hand of a 14-year-old child from certain motor disability, as a result of his suffering from a very serious home injury.
Details of the incident and the rapid response
The incident unfolded when the hospital's emergency department received the child in critical condition after he fell onto a glass panel from a height of approximately 140 cm inside his home. The fall resulted in a deep laceration to his wrist, accompanied by severe bleeding and extensive damage to the tendons responsible for hand movement, presenting the medical team with a significant challenge in preserving the function of the injured limb.
Upon arrival, the emergency protocols for dealing with bleeding injuries (Trauma Code) were activated, and the ambulance teams provided the necessary initial procedures to control the bleeding and stabilize the patient’s vital signs, before urgently transferring him to the operating room, in a standard response that reflects the hospital’s readiness to deal with emergency cases that threaten life or organ safety.
Delicate surgical intervention to repair tendons
The medical team underwent a thorough exploration of the wound under anesthesia, revealing multiple tears in the main tendons. With great skill, the surgeons repaired the damaged tendons using fine, non-absorbable sutures, taking great care to restore normal blood flow to the hand and ensure the integrity of the surrounding nerves. This was done to guarantee the full restoration of motor and sensory functions and to avoid any future complications that could lead to permanent disability.
The Third Riyadh Health Cluster: A qualitative leap in services
This achievement reflects the remarkable development in medical services provided by the Third Riyadh Health Cluster , which covers a wide geographical area encompassing the western governorates of the Riyadh region. Through its strategy, the cluster aims to empower peripheral hospitals, such as Shaqra General Hospital, to perform complex and delicate surgical procedures without the need to transfer patients to central hospitals in the capital. This saves time and effort and contributes to saving lives and organs during the critical period of injury.
Keeping pace with the health transformation and Vision 2030
These efforts align with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program, one of the programs under the Kingdom's Vision 2030 , which focuses on facilitating access to healthcare services and improving their quality and efficiency. Rapid response to emergencies and the availability of specialized medical expertise across the Kingdom are fundamental pillars for improving the quality of life and increasing the life expectancy of citizens and residents.
The hospital administration confirmed that the injured child is currently in stable condition and is under close medical observation, and that an integrated treatment and rehabilitation plan has been put in place to ensure the full restoration of hand functions during the next recovery phase.
