Shuran Trails in Madinah: An urban destination to enhance quality of life
The Municipality of Madinah continues its tireless efforts to reshape the city's urban landscape through the "Shuran Pathways" project, a pioneering model for implementing the concepts of "humanizing cities." This project is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at transforming public spaces into vibrant environments that integrate social well-being with investment opportunities, in line with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the Quality of Life Program.
Context of urban development and humanizing cities
The Shuran Trails project is not merely an addition to the city's facilities; it is part of a historic transformation underway in the Kingdom's urban planning approach. After decades of planning heavily focused on vehicular traffic, the focus is now shifting towards "humanization," a philosophy that places people and their needs at the heart of the planning process. These projects hold particular significance in Madinah, given its religious and historical importance. Developing recreational and sports infrastructure contributes to providing a comprehensive living experience for both residents and visitors, enhancing the city's appeal as a modern, global destination that preserves its authentic identity.
Details of the first phase: Integrated infrastructure
The first phase of the project, successfully completed on an area exceeding 85,350 square meters in the Shuran neighborhood, witnessed a significant leap forward in the services provided. This phase included the creation of an extensive network of walking and cycling paths designed to the highest engineering standards, surrounded by green spaces that contribute to moderating the climate and reducing temperatures. To bolster the economic aspect, seven promising investment zones were allocated, in addition to a sports field and organized parking areas, which directly contributed to addressing visual pollution and enhancing the aesthetic value of the area.
Phase Two: Diversification of Entertainment Options
Building on this success, the second phase, spanning over 75,000 square meters, added new dimensions to the project. This phase was distinguished by its focus on age diversity and varied interests, featuring three dedicated children's play areas, a skate park appealing to young people, an additional sports field, and a cycling track. The investment aspect was also enhanced with three new zones, creating job opportunities and supporting local entrepreneurs.
Expected social and economic impact
The Shuran Pathways project has significant developmental dimensions that extend beyond the local scope:
- On a local level: It provides a healthy outlet that encourages residents to exercise daily, which has a positive impact on public health and reduces chronic diseases associated with lack of movement.
- On the economic level: Investment zones contribute to stimulating commercial activity within residential neighborhoods, which raises the value of surrounding properties and attracts quality investments in the restaurant, cafe and services sector.
- Sustainability and Environment: The expansion of green spaces contributes to supporting the "Green Saudi Arabia" initiative by increasing vegetation cover within cities.
Inclusivity and future vision
The project's design incorporates the principles of "universal accessibility" to ensure that all segments of society benefit, including people with disabilities. Fifteen designated parking spaces have been provided for them, in addition to passenger loading and unloading areas. This project is part of an ambitious master plan covering nearly one million square meters, aiming to transform the Shuran area into a comprehensive urban center combining residential, recreational, and investment opportunities, thus setting a benchmark for sustainable urban planning in the Kingdom.
