Socotra's sports scene is booming thanks to Saudi support: tournaments and development projects
Socotra Governorate is witnessing an unprecedented surge in sports and youth activities, reflecting the fruits of the strategic development partnership between the local authority and the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen. In this context, Ali Mohammed Sa’ab, Director General of the Youth and Sports Office in Socotra Governorate, affirmed that the generous support provided by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the cornerstone of the renaissance the youth and sports sector is experiencing in the archipelago. He noted that this support has transcended the traditional concept of aid to become a fundamental pillar for human development and the advancement of the region.
A comprehensive development context and strategic role
This sporting initiative is part of the broader efforts of the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen, which has not limited itself to a single sector but has extended to vital sectors such as education, health, energy, and water. Sports initiatives are particularly important in Socotra, given the governorate's demographics, where youth constitute the majority of the population. Investing in sports is a direct investment in social cohesion, as these activities provide a safe and nurturing environment for young people, thus strengthening local community stability and connecting youth to sustainable development projects.
Empowering youth and investing in their potential
In an exclusive statement to Okaz newspaper, Sa’ab explained that the fruits of Saudi support were clearly evident in the ability to channel the energies of young people and guide their creativity towards positive and constructive paths. He emphasized that Saudi-backed sports initiatives have directly contributed to reducing the amount of free time young people have, protecting them from slipping into harmful behaviors or negative, alien phenomena. Today, sports have become a strong bulwark and a social fortress that protects young people daily from dangers, reinforcing the values of fair competition and teamwork.
Ramadan activities and unique championships
The Director General of Youth and Sports described the current activities as a blessed "Ramadan fruit," noting that the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen launched a series of Ramadan tournaments, including volleyball and chess competitions. These events are characterized by broad participation, with 12 sports clubs from across the archipelago taking part, reflecting the inclusive nature of the activities and their lack of concentration in the capital. Sa'ab considered this step a "tremendous initiative" that brought joy to the faces of athletes and fans alike, revealing that arrangements are currently underway to launch a large-scale football activity after Eid al-Fitr.
Numbers reflect the scale of the achievement
Sa’ab pointed to the impressive statistics that reflect the scale of this initiative, noting that the Ramadan tournaments saw the participation of a constellation of talents, comprising 176 players, supported by a technical and administrative staff of 36 specialists. The sporting competitions spanned 10 consecutive days, with events taking place on volleyball courts and chess tables, bringing together 12 elite professional players from official clubs. This diversity of sports embodies the Saudi program's vision of supporting all mental and physical activities simultaneously, catering to the varied interests and inclinations of the province's youth.
Model infrastructure for sports services
Sa’ab highlighted a crucial point regarding the venue for the tournaments: the competitions are being held at the “Sirhan Model School,” one of the leading educational facilities built by the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen as part of its infrastructure projects. This integration reflects the insightful Saudi vision of linking development projects with community activities, utilizing the school’s well-equipped facilities and sports fields to practice sports at a high level, thus ensuring the sustainability of these activities and providing a suitable environment for them.
The Director General of the Youth and Sports Office concluded his statement by expressing his deep gratitude and appreciation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, its leadership, government and people, for its firm fraternal stances and unlimited support that did not stop at one sector over another, stressing that the imprints of the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen have become engraved in the conscience of the people of the archipelago, and a living witness to the depth of the fraternal ties between the two brotherly countries.
