Somalia condemns the Zamfara terrorist attacks and calls for the perpetrators to be held accountable

The Federal Republic of Somalia expressed its strong condemnation and deep denunciation of the bloody terrorist attacks that targeted Zamfara State in northwestern Nigeria, which resulted in a humanitarian tragedy in which more than fifty civilians were killed and an unspecified number of women and children were abducted, in an incident that shook the human conscience and provoked a wave of regional and international outrage.

Official statement and absolute solidarity

In an official statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Monday, Mogadishu affirmed its full support and solidarity with the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in this tragic event. The statement emphasized that Somalia, which has suffered for years from the scourge of terrorism, fully understands the profound pain inflicted by such criminal acts, and called upon the kidnappers to immediately and unconditionally release all hostages, including women and children, and ensure their safe return to their families.

The security context in northwestern Nigeria

These attacks come amid a complex security situation in northwestern Nigeria, particularly in Zamfara State, which in recent years has become a hotbed of armed gangs known locally as "bandits." These groups exploit the vast forests and weak security presence in remote areas to launch deadly attacks, extort money from farmers, and seize control of illegal mining operations, which explains the frequent incidents of killings and mass kidnappings for ransom.

The importance of the Somali position and the regional dimension

The Somali stance carries significant political and security implications, reflecting a growing awareness of the need to unify African efforts to confront cross-border security challenges. The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in its statement, affirmed its full support for the efforts undertaken by the Nigerian authorities to establish security and stability, and to ensure that the perpetrators are pursued and brought to justice to receive their due punishment.

A call for African unity

The statement concluded by emphasizing the need for the African continent to remain united in the face of the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism, noting that the security of African states is indivisible. Nigeria, as Africa's largest economy and most populous country, is a cornerstone of stability in the Sahel and West Africa, and any destabilization there would negatively impact the entire region, necessitating concerted international and regional support for Abuja in its fight against armed groups.
