Rare surgery saves a scout during Hajj at Mina Emergency Hospital
In a testament to the high quality of medical services provided during the Hajj season, a specialized surgical team at Mina Emergency Hospital 1, part of the Makkah Health Cluster, successfully ended the suffering of an 18-year-old scout who had volunteered to serve pilgrims. The young man had been suffering from a rare and complex medical condition that caused him severe and recurring abdominal pain for seven months, without a definitive diagnosis despite numerous visits to hospitals.
The young volunteer arrived at the emergency department in a state of extreme exhaustion, with initial symptoms suggesting suspected appendicitis. Immediately, the necessary tests were performed, including an urgent CT scan which revealed inflammation of the mesenteric lymph nodes, but could not clearly identify appendicitis, presenting the medical team with a diagnostic challenge.
Based on a thorough clinical assessment and the medical team's expertise, a crucial decision was made to perform an urgent exploratory surgery. During the procedure, the team uncovered two surprising medical findings. The first was the presence of an atrophied and fibrotic appendix resulting from chronic inflammation, which explained the difficulty in diagnosing it via radiography. The second surprise was the discovery of Meckel's diverticulum, a rare congenital pouch in the small intestine, which was contributing to the patient's deteriorating condition. Thanks to the surgeons' skill, the appendix and the diverticulum were successfully and precisely removed without the need to resecte any part of the healthy intestine.

This accomplishment reflects the high level of preparedness of the Saudi health sector and its ability to provide world-class medical services during the largest annual gathering of people in the world.
The importance and impact of the event
The significance of this surgical procedure transcends its isolated nature, serving as tangible proof of the high quality of care provided not only to pilgrims but also to the thousands of volunteers and staff serving the Hajj season. Saving this young scout, a symbol of generosity and dedication to serving others, sends a powerful message of reassurance to all involved in the Hajj system and highlights the humanitarian and advanced nature of services in the Kingdom. Internationally, such successes enhance the Kingdom's reputation as a leader in crowd management and the provision of exceptional healthcare services during the Hajj season.
The surgery was a complete success, and the young scout has begun the recovery phase in an excellent manner and is receiving the necessary medical and nursing care in the hospital. He is expected to be discharged soon in perfect health and wellness, to return and complete his humanitarian mission in serving the guests of God.
