The Supreme Court calls for the sighting of the crescent moon of Ramadan 1447 on Tuesday evening

The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia issued an important statement calling upon all Muslims throughout the Kingdom to look for the crescent moon of Ramadan for the year 1447 AH, on the evening of Tuesday, the 29th of Sha'ban, corresponding to February 17, 2026. This announcement stems from the noble Prophetic tradition and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in anticipating the beginning of the Islamic months, especially the month of fasting, which the Muslim Ummah eagerly awaits.

The court explained in its statement the legal and calendar basis for this investigation, referring to its previous decision confirming the beginning of the month of Sha'ban, with Tuesday, August 1, 1447 AH, being the first day of the month. Accordingly, next Tuesday will be the 29th of the month, the day on which the official sighting of the new moon is conducted to determine whether the following day is the last day of Sha'ban or the first day of the blessed month of Ramadan. The court urged anyone capable of sighting the new moon, whether with the naked eye or using astronomical instruments, to report to the nearest court and register their testimony, or to contact the nearest center for assistance in reaching the relevant authorities.

The importance of investigation and monitoring methodology in the Kingdom

The sighting of the crescent moon for the month of Ramadan in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia holds special significance, not only locally but also regionally and internationally, given the Kingdom's status as the Qibla for Muslims and its custodianship of the Two Holy Mosques. The Kingdom follows a precise methodology that combines traditional sighting with astronomical calculations, deploying official moon-sighting committees in strategic locations known for their clear skies and sharp observations, such as Sudair, Tamir, and other approved observatories, to ensure the accuracy of the crescent sighting.

Invitation to participate and seek reward

In closing, the Supreme Court urged those capable of sighting the new moon to pay attention to this matter and join the committees formed in their respective regions for this purpose, emphasizing that this is an act of cooperation in righteousness and piety, and a benefit to all Muslims. This procedure is an annual tradition that revives a great ritual and unites the feelings of Muslims in welcoming the holy month. This call underscores transparency and the commitment to involving the community in confirming the new moon, thus strengthening confidence in official announcements issued by the judicial and religious authorities in the country.
