Taif Humanization Projects: Developing the Miqat (pilgrimage sites) to serve the pilgrims
As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to achieve the goals of Vision 2030, specifically the Guests of God Service Program, the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing announced that the Taif Governorate Municipality has successfully completed a series of urban development and improvement projects. These projects target several key locations and vital routes closely linked to the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage routes, aiming to enhance operational readiness and improve the visitor experience during the 1447 AH Hajj season.
Historical context and strategic importance of Taif
The Taif Governorate is considered the eastern gateway to Mecca and holds immense historical, geographical, and Islamic significance. Taif is home to two of the most important miqats (designated points for entering ihram) established by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): Qarn al-Manazil (now known as As-Sayl al-Kabir) and Wadi Mahram. These two miqats serve pilgrims and Umrah performers coming from the Najd region, the Eastern Province, and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, as well as pilgrims from East Asian countries arriving by land. Therefore, developing these sites is not merely an improvement to the infrastructure, but rather an extension of the historical care that the Saudi leadership has shown to the Two Holy Mosques and their visitors.
Details of urban development and humanization projects
The Taif Municipality's field efforts included the development and improvement of four key sites, most notably the Wadi Mahram and Qarn al-Manazil Miqats. In addition to these sites, development work extended to vital roads within the governorate, such as Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Street and Shihar Street. These efforts resulted in the improvement of more than 4.3 kilometers of roads and the creation of over 16,000 square meters of sidewalks and open spaces.
To ensure inclusive services, over 3.8 kilometers of pedestrian paths have been specially designed to meet the needs of the blind, the elderly, and people with disabilities, enhancing mobility and safety. Environmental considerations have also been prioritized through the planting of over 3,500 trees and shrubs and the creation of 4,600 square meters of green spaces, contributing to a more aesthetically pleasing urban landscape.
Quality of tracks and upgrading of infrastructure
In an innovative engineering move, over 4,800 square meters of basalt stone paving were installed, which effectively reduces high temperatures during the summer, providing a comfortable environment for pedestrians. More than 200 public service facilities were also installed to preserve the urban environment.
To enhance security and safety at night, more than 900 ground lighting units and 200 vertical lighting units were installed, along with providing more than 300 vehicle parking spaces and 200 seats for the comfort of visitors at the targeted locations.
Expected impact of projects locally and internationally
Locally, these projects contribute to improving Taif's urban landscape, raising the quality of life for its residents, and stimulating economic and tourism activity. Regionally and internationally, these advanced facilities ensure a smooth and comfortable spiritual experience for millions of Muslims, reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's distinguished image and its exceptional ability to manage crowds and provide the highest quality municipal services to pilgrims.
