Taif University suspends in-person classes and switches to remote learning due to weather
Taif University announces the shift to distance learning
In a proactive step aimed at ensuring the safety of its staff and students, Taif University announced the suspension of in-person classes at its main campus in Al-Hawiyah, as well as at all its branches and campuses throughout the province. The university decided to switch to distance learning starting Monday, Shawwal 25, 1447 AH (April 13, 2026), at 12:30 PM. This decision comes in response to reports and warnings issued by the National Center for Meteorology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which indicated weather fluctuations requiring caution.
The importance of the decision and the university's commitment to safety
The administration of Taif University explained that this urgent measure stems from its absolute commitment to the safety of its students, both male and female, as well as to maintaining the security and well-being of faculty and administrative staff. The safety of individuals is a paramount priority that transcends all other considerations, an approach followed by educational institutions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in line with official directives emphasizing the need to provide a safe environment for everyone under these exceptional weather conditions.
A smooth transition to e-learning via “Blackboard”
To ensure the continuity of the educational process without any interruption or delay to the academic curriculum, the university confirmed that lectures will be completed as scheduled via the approved e-learning platform, Blackboard. Saudi universities, including Taif University, are distinguished by their advanced and robust technological infrastructure, in which significant investments have been made in recent years, particularly in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which supports digital transformation. This high level of preparedness enables educational institutions to transition seamlessly and effectively from in-person to remote learning, in accordance with applicable academic regulations and procedures.
The climatic context of Taif city and the role of the National Center for Meteorology
Taif Governorate is characterized by its high geographical location and mountainous terrain, making it susceptible to rapid climatic changes and significant weather fluctuations, including heavy rainfall, dense fog, and strong surface winds. In this context, the National Center for Meteorology plays a vital and pivotal role through its early warning system, which provides accurate and continuous weather updates. Government and educational institutions rely directly on these reports to make critical decisions, such as suspending in-person classes, thus contributing to reducing the risks associated with travel.
Local and national impact of the decision
At the local level, this decision contributes to easing traffic congestion in Taif Governorate during peak hours and periods of inclement weather, thus reducing the likelihood of traffic accidents and alleviating the burden on security and emergency services. At the national level, it reflects the high level of coordination and collaboration among various state institutions in effectively managing crises, and demonstrates that weather conditions are no longer an obstacle to the continuation of education thanks to technology.
