Tawakkalna and the Makkah Road: A digital transformation that facilitates the Hajj journey for the year 1445 AH

An unprecedented digital Hajj experience

In a move reflecting the digital transformation underway in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the comprehensive national application “Tawakkalna” offers an integrated digital experience for pilgrims benefiting from the “Makkah Route” initiative. This integration facilitates the Hajj journey from its very beginning, as the application allows pilgrims to view their Hajj cards and permits electronically within an advanced technological system. This contributes to streamlining procedures, enhancing the efficiency of services provided to pilgrims, and enriching their spiritual journey with a smooth and uncomplicated experience.

The “Makkah Route” Initiative: Historical Background and Future Vision

The Makkah Route Initiative is a leading initiative within the Guests of God Service Program, one of the programs of Saudi Vision 2030. The Ministry of Interior first launched the initiative in 2017 (1438 AH) to streamline entry procedures for pilgrims arriving in the Kingdom from their home countries. These procedures include issuing e-visas, collecting biometric data, verifying health requirements, and tagging and sorting luggage. Upon arrival at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, pilgrims are transferred directly to dedicated buses that transport them to their accommodations, while their luggage is delivered to them by the relevant authorities. Since its launch, the initiative has served more than 1.25 million pilgrims and has expanded to include numerous countries, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to providing the highest quality services to the guests of God.

The role of “SDAIA” and the “Tawakkalna” application in digital transformation

The Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) plays a pivotal role in this integration, developing and operating the digital ecosystem for the Makkah Route Initiative. SDAIA connects all participating government entities within a unified technological environment, expediting procedures and ensuring the accurate verification of pilgrims' data and biometrics. The Tawakkalna application, developed and operated by SDAIA, serves as the primary interface to this system, enabling pilgrims to easily access their Hajj permits and related services, thus enhancing a comprehensive digital experience that begins in the pilgrim's home country and concludes upon their arrival at their accommodation in Makkah or Madinah.

Importance and expected impact

The integration of the Makkah Route Initiative services into the Tawakkalna app is of paramount importance on several levels. Locally, this achievement reflects the Kingdom's progress in government digital transformation and highlights its ability to leverage technology to serve one of the most important Islamic rituals. Internationally, it presents a unique model for crowd management and facilitating travel procedures for major events. For pilgrims, the direct impact is a significant reduction in waiting times upon arrival and a lessening of travel burdens, allowing them to fully focus on performing their rituals with spirituality and peace of mind. The Tawakkalna app now includes more than 1,300 services offered in collaboration with over 350 entities and serves a user base exceeding 35 million, making it a cornerstone of the Kingdom's digital services ecosystem.
