The Public Transport Authority impounds 1,047 unregistered vehicles during Hajj
Intensive monitoring efforts to ensure the safety of pilgrims
The Public Transport Authority in Saudi Arabia affirmed its continued intensive field monitoring efforts during the Hajj season, aimed at curbing violations in passenger transport activities and enhancing compliance with regulations and laws. In this context, the Authority announced the impounding of 1,047 vehicles found operating illegally as passenger transport vehicles. These seizures were part of a series of comprehensive field campaigns conducted in Mecca, the Holy Sites, land and air entry points, and all major roads leading to them since the beginning of the season.
The historical and organizational context of the Hajj transport sector
This decisive step comes as part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's historic and ongoing efforts to organize and develop the Hajj and Umrah system. With the launch of Vision 2030, the transportation and logistics sector has witnessed a radical transformation and unprecedented development, as the Kingdom aims to facilitate the hosting of millions of pilgrims and Umrah performers annually and provide them with the highest quality services. The state has provided an integrated transportation system that includes the Haramain High-Speed Railway, modern shuttle bus networks, licensed taxis, and smart vehicle routing applications, making reliance on informal transportation unjustified.
Local impact and security and economic importance
This regulatory measure is of paramount importance both locally and regionally; it is not merely an organizational procedure, but a safeguard for ensuring the safety of pilgrims. The phenomenon of unregulated transportation, known locally as "Kaddada," disrupts traffic flow in the holiest of places and increases the likelihood of traffic accidents due to the lack of regular vehicle inspections and driver qualifications. Furthermore, eliminating this phenomenon supports the national economy by directing revenues to legitimate companies and institutions that adhere to quality standards and provide formal and safe employment opportunities.
Advantages of organized transport and risks of haphazardness
The Public Transport Authority emphasized the importance of pilgrims being aware of the necessity of using only licensed and authorized transport providers. Authorized transport guarantees the user's full rights and offers numerous advantages, including diverse transportation options, transparent and fair pricing, and multiple electronic payment methods. The system also allows for trip tracking, verification of driver and vehicle information, and access to official channels for addressing any reports or concerns, contributing to a safer and more organized transportation experience.
Deterrent penalties and a call for community cooperation
The authority strongly warned that operating a passenger transport service without the necessary licenses is a clear violation of regulations and warrants deterrent penalties, including hefty fines and impoundment of the offending vehicle. In closing, the authority urged all pilgrims and beneficiaries to adhere to using licensed transportation services and to report violators by contacting the unified number (19929). It emphasized that integrated efforts between government agencies and the community are the best way to curb illegal practices and ensure the success of the Hajj season.
