Tottenham are in talks with Liverpool to sign Andy Robertson in the winter transfer window

In a surprising move that could shift the balance of power in the English Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Liverpool's experienced Scottish left-back, Andy Robertson, during the current winter transfer window. This move comes as the London club seeks to bolster its squad with experienced players to compete for European qualification.

Uncertainty about the future and a desire to participate

Robertson, 31, is at a crucial juncture in his career, with his current contract with the Reds expiring at the end of this season. The player further fueled speculation last week by stating that his future remains undecided, opening the door wide for clubs eager to acquire his services, most notably Tottenham, who see him as a valuable addition to their defense.

According to reports published by BBC Sport, Tottenham Hotspur have already submitted a formal offer to sign the Scottish captain, but negotiations are still ongoing and no final agreement has been reached yet. Robertson's primary motivation for wanting to leave is his significantly reduced playing time. He hopes to increase his starting appearances in preparation for leading his country at the 2026 World Cup, especially since he has only started four league matches this season.

Liverpool's options to replace the captain

On the other hand, Liverpool's management appears to be developing contingency plans in case one of the key players from the team's golden generation leaves. Reports indicate that Hungarian striker Georgi Kerkás is the first choice available to Liverpool's manager to fill the left-back position should the deal go through. Additionally, the club is seriously considering cutting short the loan of Greek defender Kostas Tsimikas to Italian club Roma and bringing him back to bolster the left flank and ensure squad depth.

The end of an era at Anfield

Robertson's potential departure would mark the end of a golden era for the player at Anfield. The Scottish star joined Liverpool from Hull City in a deal considered one of the most successful in the club's modern history, costing just £8 million in 2017, under the management of former German coach Jürgen Klopp.

Since then, Robertson has cemented his place in football history, making 363 appearances and contributing to nine major titles, most notably the long-awaited Premier League title and the Champions League triumph. His final appearance for the club was as a substitute in the 1-1 draw against Burnley on January 17th, which could well be the final act of a remarkable career with the Reds.
