Trump threatens Iran with 'total victory': Escalation worries the world
Former US President Donald Trump renewed his escalating rhetoric towards Iran, vowing to achieve “total victory” in the event of any military confrontation. These statements bring back memories of the intense tension that prevailed during his presidency and raise questions about the possibility of the specter of war returning to the region.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump downplayed the significance of any ceasefire negotiations, likening the situation to a terminally ill patient. He said, “The ceasefire is on life support. It’s like the doctor walks into the room and says your loved one has a one percent chance of survival.” He added confidently, “We will achieve total victory,” asserting that Tehran is well aware of the magnitude of its potential military defeat.
Roots of tension: From the nuclear agreement to the policy of maximum pressure
These statements were not spontaneous, but rather an extension of a series of tensions that began to deepen after Trump's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA) in 2018. This agreement, reached in 2015 between Iran and major world powers, aimed to curb Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for lifting economic sanctions. However, the Trump administration deemed the agreement "disastrous" and reimposed harsh economic sanctions as part of a strategy known as "maximum pressure," intended to force Iran back to the negotiating table for a new agreement on American terms.
Potential repercussions on the regional and international scene
Any military escalation between the United States and Iran would have repercussions far beyond the borders of those two countries, extending to the entire Middle East and the world. Iran wields considerable influence in the region through a network of proxies in countries such as Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen, and any confrontation could ignite proxy wars on multiple fronts. Furthermore, the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil supply passes, would be severely jeopardized, potentially leading to a dramatic surge in global energy prices and destabilizing the global economy. For its part, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly affirmed its commitment to its "legitimate rights" and its rejection of any concessions that fail to guarantee its national interests, thus creating a complex and unpredictable political landscape.
Amid this tension, the region remains on tenterhooks, with some analysts suggesting that Trump’s statements may be part of his psychological warfare to pressure Tehran, while others fear that a miscalculation by any party could drag the region into a devastating conflict whose repercussions would be difficult to contain.
