Upgrading the lighting of historic mosques in Medina with modern technologies

In a move aimed at enhancing the aesthetics of Islamic architecture and improving energy efficiency, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, represented by its branch in the Madinah region, has completed a significant project to modernize the lighting systems in three of the most important historical Islamic landmarks: the Qiblatain Mosque, the Sayyid al-Shuhada Mosque, and the Friday Mosque. This project was undertaken under the direct guidance and supervision of His Excellency the Minister, Sheikh Dr. Abdul Latif bin Abdulaziz Al Sheikh.

Technical and artistic development details

The renovation work at the Qiblatain Mosque replacing 1,500 interior lighting units with modern units featuring a soft glow at a color temperature of 3,000 Kelvin. These units are equipped with photovoltaic cells and smart timers, which directly contributes to conserving electricity and providing high visual comfort for worshippers, in harmony with the unique architectural character of the mosque and the surrounding cultural center.

At the Sayyid al-Shuhada Mosque and the Friday Mosque , the work focused on enhancing the exterior and interior lighting. At the Sayyid al-Shuhada Mosque, 140 exterior floodlights and modern interior lighting units were installed, in addition to 35 exterior floodlights at the Friday Mosque. These installations were designed to harmonize with the architectural style and surrounding environment to ensure operational efficiency and sustainability.

The historical and spiritual significance of the developed landmarks

This step is of great importance given the historical and religious significance of these mosques in the hearts of Muslims around the world:

  • The Mosque of the Two Qiblas: This mosque witnessed a pivotal event in Islamic history, as it was here that the revelation came down to change the direction of prayer from Al-Aqsa Mosque to the Grand Mosque, making it a major destination for visitors to experience this historic moment.
  • Sayyid al-Shuhada Mosque: It is located in the eternal battlefield of Uhud, next to the cemetery of the martyrs of Uhud, which contains the body of Hamza bin Abdul-Muttalib - may God be pleased with him - and is considered a prominent landmark that connects the visitor to the Prophet’s biography and the sacrifices of the Companions.
  • The Friday Mosque: It is the site where the Prophet - peace and blessings be upon him - prayed the first Friday prayer in Medina upon his arrival as an immigrant from Mecca, and it represents a symbol of the beginning of the establishment of the Islamic civil society.

Expected impact and keeping pace with the future vision

This project is not limited to the technical aspect alone, but its impact extends to environmental and tourism dimensions that align with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030. Through the use of energy-efficient LED lighting technologies and smart systems, the Ministry contributes to reducing the carbon footprint and increasing operational efficiency.

This development also positively impacts the experience of the guests of God, including pilgrims, Umrah performers, and visitors, as the carefully considered lighting creates an atmosphere of tranquility and reverence, and highlights the architectural details of these Islamic masterpieces, thus enriching the spiritual and cultural experience of visitors to the city of the Prophet - may God bless him and grant him peace.
