US envoy: Washington is strengthening its strategic presence in Greenland

The US special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, asserted that the time has come for Washington to re-establish its strategic presence in the self-governing Danish territory. These remarks come amidst rapidly shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Arctic, where major powers are vying for influence.

Landry added during his first official visit to Greenland since taking office in December, which began on Sunday: "I think it's time for the United States to re-establish its presence in Greenland, and you see President Trump speaking clearly about increasing national security operations and rehabilitating certain bases on the Arctic island.".

The historical context of the American presence in Greenland

To understand the implications of these moves, one must consider the deep historical ties that bind Washington to the island. At the height of the Cold War, Greenland represented the United States' first line of defense against any potential Soviet attack, with Washington maintaining 17 military installations across the island. As the Cold War ended, most of these installations were closed, leaving only one major military base: Petowik Air Base (formerly Thule Air Base) in the far north of the island. American interest is not new. In 1946, President Harry Truman offered to purchase Greenland from Denmark for $100 million due to its strategic importance, reflecting a long-standing American perspective on the territory.

The geopolitical and economic importance of the Arctic island

Greenland is of paramount importance in modern US military calculations, with President Donald Trump viewing control of the island as essential to US national security. The US administration fears that if its role diminishes, the island could fall under the influence of a growing China or Russia. Geographically, Greenland lies on the shortest possible trajectory for intercontinental ballistic missiles traveling from Russia to the United States via the Arctic, making it a vital early warning point.

Economically, Greenland is believed to possess vast untapped reserves of rare earth minerals, crucial materials for advanced technology, weaponry, and renewable energy, whose global supply chains are currently dominated by China. With global warming and the melting of polar ice, Greenland is emerging as a vital player, with new maritime shipping routes potentially reshaping global trade and shortening distances between continents.

Strengthening military bases and defense agreements

In a practical step to translate this strategic vision, press reports indicate that the United States intends to open three new military bases in the south of the island. This expansion is legally supported by a 1951 defense agreement, updated in 2004, which allows Washington to increase the deployment of troops and military facilities on the island, provided that the authorities in Denmark and Greenland are notified in advance, thus ensuring joint coordination within the framework of NATO.

Diplomatic moves and expected impact

Diplomatically, the American position has witnessed a remarkable development that leans towards partnership; Trump has backed down from his previous threats to annex Greenland, which he launched last January, and this has been replaced by the formation of a tripartite working group (American-Danish-Greenland) to address common security and economic concerns and build a sustainable strategic partnership.

Landry, who also serves as governor of Louisiana, is visiting the Danish territory as a special envoy to participate in a major economic forum being held in the capital, Nuuk, on Tuesday and Wednesday. This move is expected to have a significant regional and international impact, strengthening NATO's northern flank, curbing Beijing and Moscow's Arctic ambitions, and providing substantial investment opportunities that could revitalize Greenland's local economy and bolster its future autonomy.
