Meteorology: Dust storms and active winds expected in Riyadh and the Eastern Province today

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued an important weather alert on Thursday, indicating that large parts of the Riyadh and Eastern regions will be affected by unstable weather conditions, including strong surface winds and dust storms. This report is part of the center's ongoing monitoring of weather changes to ensure the safety of citizens and residents.

Weather details for the Riyadh region

The weather report indicated that the weather conditions in the Riyadh region would begin at 9:00 AM and continue until 3:00 PM. These conditions include strong winds that will stir up dust, reducing horizontal visibility to between 3 and 5 kilometers. The center identified the affected areas as the governorates of Zulfi, Ghat, Majmaah, Thadiq, Huraymila, Rumah, and Shaqra. Due to their open geographical nature, these governorates are particularly susceptible to the effects of strong winds that carry dust from the surrounding desert regions.

Weather conditions in the Eastern Province

Simultaneously with the situation in Riyadh, the National Center for Meteorology warned of similar weather conditions affecting parts of the Eastern Province. The governorates of Hafr Al-Batin, Al-Khafji, Al-Nairiyah, and Qaryat Al-Ulya are experiencing active surface winds and dust storms, leading to reduced horizontal visibility. This phenomenon is expected to begin at the same time, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

climatic and geographical context

These weather phenomena are part of the typical desert climate of the Arabian Peninsula, especially during the transitional periods between seasons. These periods are usually characterized by rapid changes in atmospheric pressure, generating strong winds capable of carrying dust and sand long distances. These warnings are particularly important given the location of the affected areas, which include a vital network of highways connecting the central, eastern, and northern parts of the Kingdom, making reduced visibility a significant factor in transportation and travel.

Expected effects and safety recommendations

Due to the dust storm causing a decrease in air quality and reduced visibility, experts advise caution, especially for drivers on highways and open roads. Those with respiratory conditions, asthma, and allergies are also advised to avoid direct exposure to the dust and remain indoors as much as possible during the warning period. Authorities consistently emphasize the importance of following real-time weather updates through the official platforms of the National Center of Meteorology to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
