Prevention confirms health readiness for Hajj season and monitors Ebola

“Prevention” confirms full readiness for the Hajj season and is monitoring global epidemiological developments

The Public Health Authority (Weqaya) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in continuous coordination with the World Health Organization and international health bodies, is closely monitoring the latest developments related to the Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, as well as tracking global developments related to the Hantavirus. These diligent efforts underscore the high efficiency and readiness of the Kingdom's epidemiological surveillance system in addressing any potential health risks, thus ensuring the protection of the health of citizens and residents and providing a safe environment for pilgrims during the Hajj season.

Historical context of Ebola and Hanta viruses

Historically, the Ebola virus was first discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is a highly contagious disease that causes severe hemorrhagic fever. The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on several occasions, most notably in 2019, according to the International Health Regulations. Hantavirus, on the other hand, is a viral disease primarily transmitted by rodents. While human-to-human transmission is very rare, global health authorities are monitoring it closely to ensure it does not mutate or spread. The risk of Hantavirus infection is classified as very low for the Kingdom and the Hajj season.

The importance of epidemiological surveillance and its regional and international impact

These proactive measures are of paramount importance both regionally and internationally, especially given that Saudi Arabia hosts millions of pilgrims annually from around the world. Managing such massive crowds requires a robust and advanced healthcare system to prevent the introduction of any infectious diseases. The Kingdom has demonstrated remarkable success in managing previous global health crises, making its experience in mass gathering medicine a model to be emulated globally. Maintaining health security during the Hajj season not only protects Saudi Arabia but also prevents the spread of epidemics to other countries upon the pilgrims' return home.

Tightening precautionary measures at entry points

Based on periodic reviews and risk assessments, Saudi authorities have maintained the strict precautionary measures implemented since July 2019, which include suspending the issuance of entry visas to travelers from affected areas. Control has also been tightened on travelers arriving from countries neighboring outbreak areas, including Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), which has not yet reported any cases.

In order to enhance preparedness, the Ministry of Health and the Prevention Authority raised the level of response at all entry points (land, sea, and air). Rapid response teams were activated, and health awareness and guidance campaigns for travelers were intensified. The readiness of hospitals and health centers to handle any suspected cases according to approved medical protocols was also confirmed, along with the activation of daily epidemiological surveillance at pilgrims' accommodations.

A message of reassurance to the pilgrims

In its concluding remarks, the Public Health Authority (Weqaya) issued a clear message of reassurance to citizens, residents, and pilgrims, confirming that no confirmed or suspected cases of any of these viruses have been recorded within the Kingdom. It clarified that the overall health situation of the pilgrims is reassuring and stable, and is under close, round-the-clock monitoring. The Authority continues its comprehensive coordination with all relevant local and international bodies, taking all necessary preventive measures dictated by the evolving global epidemiological situation, to ensure that pilgrims can perform their rituals in a completely healthy and safe environment.
