Yemen aims to develop two ports on the Arabian Sea to revive the economy

In a strategic move aimed at bolstering the Yemeni economy and activating the country's vital resources, the Minister of Transport in the internationally recognized Yemeni government, Dr. Abdul Salam Humaid, unveiled ambitious plans to develop two crucial ports overlooking the Arabian Sea. In statements to the media, the minister affirmed that the government is actively working to develop the port of Qana in Shabwa Governorate andthe port of Nishtun in Al Mahrah Governorate, transforming them into modern commercial gateways capable of receiving large cargo ships and facilitating import and export activities.

General context and importance of the strategic location

This initiative comes amidst the complex circumstances facing Yemen, where years of war have deteriorated infrastructure and paralyzed operations at key Yemeni ports, particularly the port of Hodeidah, which is under Houthi control. Historically, Yemeni ports have played a pivotal role in global trade thanks to Yemen's unique location overlooking the Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world's most important shipping lanes. By developing the ports of Qana and Nishtun, the government aims to create strategic alternatives to ports outside its control, ensure the flow of essential goods and humanitarian aid to liberated areas, and revitalize trade, which is vital to the national economy.

Expected economic and developmental impact

The development of these two ports carries promising economic and developmental dimensions on various levels. Locally, the project is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities for residents of Shabwa and Al-Mahra governorates and surrounding areas, thus helping to alleviate unemployment and improve living standards. It will also revitalize economic sectors related to transportation, logistics, and warehousing, and stimulate local and foreign investment in these promising regions.

At the regional and international levels, the presence of modern and efficient ports on the Arabian Sea under the management of the legitimate government will enhance Yemen's position as a key player on the maritime trade map. This will provide a safe and reliable alternative to international shipping lanes and could attract a portion of the region's transit trade, generating significant foreign currency revenue for the public treasury. Furthermore, this project sends a strong message to the international community that the Yemeni government is committed to its development plans despite all challenges and is working to utilize its resources to serve its people and achieve the desired economic stability.
