The Yemeni presidency is unifying military forces and pursuing arms dealers
In a strategic move aimed at strengthening the state structure and resetting the security and military landscape in the liberated areas, the Presidential Leadership Council in Yemen has taken decisive decisions to unify the leadership of all military and security formations, in parallel with launching strict campaigns to pursue those involved in the distribution and trade of illegal weapons.
Context of unifying the military establishment
These moves come as part of the ongoing efforts undertaken by the council since its formation in April 2022, following the transfer of power from former President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi. The council inherited a complex military reality characterized by multiple formations and loyalties in the liberated areas, making the establishment of the "Joint Security and Military Committee" a top priority for the transitional phase. These efforts aim to integrate the forces affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council, the Giants Brigades, the National Resistance, and the National Army under a unified operational umbrella under the Ministries of Defense and Interior, in accordance with the outcomes of the Riyadh consultations.
Combating the spread of weapons and chaos
Regarding security, the Presidential Council stressed the need to end the indiscriminate armed displays that have long plagued public order in the interim capital, Aden, and neighboring governorates. The new directives include strict legal action against those involved in the illegal distribution of weapons, a phenomenon that has fueled local conflicts and destabilized the region. This step is considered essential to thwart extremist groups and sleeper cells that exploit the proliferation of weapons to carry out destructive agendas.
Strategic importance and regional dimensions
This trend carries significant implications both domestically and regionally. Domestically, unifying military command is the cornerstone of restoring state authority and improving services, as economic stability cannot be achieved without security. Strategically, a unified military front strengthens the legitimate government's position in any future political negotiations to end the war and bolsters its resolve against the Houthi group should peace efforts falter.
These steps are strongly supported by the coalition supporting legitimacy, led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, who see unifying the Yemeni ranks as an inevitable necessity to ensure the security of the region and international navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab.
